LCHS's Honors Algebra 2 Description:

Length: One year

Number of Credits: One

Offered to Grades: 10, 11

Course Type: Required/Elective

Graduation Requirement: Math credit toward the four-year math requirement or elective credit if the four-year requirement has been satisfied

Prerequisites: An A average in Honors Algebra 1 and Honors Geometry, and Teacher Recommendation

Average Time Outside of Class: Students in this class can expect 20-50 minutes of homework each night.

Recommendation for Honors Algebra 2: This course is designed for hardworking, mature, and motivated students who excel at and enjoy mathematics. Honors Algebra 2 is an intensive study of algebra; the course covers more material, is more in-depth, has more homework, and moves at a much faster pace than regular Algebra 2. Typically students who take this rigorous class are students who have successfully completed Honors Algebra 1 and Honors Geometry with A’s. Approximately 10-15% of sophomores and juniors enroll in Honors Algebra 2.

Description: The purpose of Honors Algebra 2 is to develop, enhance, expand, continue, and apply concepts taught in Algebra 1. Topics include simplifying and evaluating numerical and variable expressions, solving linear, quadratic, polynomial, exponential, logarithmic, rational, radical, and trigonometric equations and inequalities with real and complex solutions algebraically and graphically, develop and apply problem-solving skills for algebraic and worded math problems, determine function types, create a tables, graphs, and equations of functions, appropriately use a graphing calculator to investigate algebra, and prepare students for future math courses. Students in this class can expect 30-60 minutes of homework each night. Successful completion of this course will leave students prepared for the study of Pre-Calculus/Trigonometry or Honors Pre-Calculus/Trigonometry and basic college level mathematics courses.
