Bell ringer (verbal): What is the formula for Silver (III) oxide?
Writing names for transition metal compounds
Write the names for each element together, leaving space for the Roman Numeral after the transition metal
Figure out how many electrons total were taken by the non-metal element using the periodic table and the number of atoms of that element
Divide that number by the number of transition metal atoms to find out how many electrons each atom gave away
Write that number as the Roman Numeral after the transition metal
Example: Fe2O3
Looking at the periodic table, Oxygen has 6 valence electrons. Each atom will take 2 more electrons. Since there are 3 oxygen atoms, a total of 6 electrons will be taken.
The iron atoms must have given up a total of 6 electrons. Since there were 2 iron atoms, each must have given up 3 electrons
Name of compound is Iron (III) oxide
Naming transition metals assignment - write the name of each compound
CuO
Cu2O
FeN
Cr2S3
ZnCl2
