The opening track from U2's 1983 album "War" is one of their most political songs. Its lyrics describe an incident in Derry, Northern Ireland, on 30th January, 1972. On this day, 26 civil rights protesters were shot by British soldiers while on a demonstration. 14 people died immediately and others were injured. Five of those wounded were shot in the back. Bloody Sunday remains among the most significant events during The Troubles.

Broken bottles under children's feet
Bodies strewn across the dead end street
Put my back up against the wall
There's many lost but tell me who has won
The trench is dug within our hearts
And mothers, children, brothers, sisters torn apart
