Tree Dedication

A tradition at Mount Saint John (MSJ) has been the planting of trees in memory of or in honor of someone or something. To establish a uniform approach to dedicating a tree on the central campus core, the following policy is established.

Purpose

  1. The dedication must be to honor or memorialize someone or something connected to the MSJ campus in some way.

  2. The appropriateness of the dedication and proposed dedication text is subject to approval from the Chair of the MSJ Campus Council.

Required Items

  1. The tree selected must be a native tree from Ohio.

  2. The optional dedication must be on a standardized plaque as provided by Mount Saint John Facilities (MSJF). No stones or other dedication monuments will be allowed. The wording of the dedication may need to be adjusted to fit the plaque and purpose.

Procedure

  1. Interested parties should fill out the online request form and submit it. The online form requires:

    • Name of requestor

    • Contact information of requestor

    • Purpose of request

    • Name of person or thing being dedicated

    • Dedication text

    • Selection of tree

      • Trees should be selected from those native varieties indicated.

      • A request for an exception entry is also provided.

    • Selection of tree placement

      • A grid map of campus should be used in selecting the general location of the tree. More than one location may be selected in case the choice is not appropriate.

      • An entry is provided to rank the choices and provide specific location directions.

      • Selection location is subject to approval from MSJF.

    • Donation

      • The donation for the tree, plaque, planting and maintenance, and replacement if the tree fails in the first year, is $500 or more. If a plaque is not required, the donation is $400 or more.

      • Payment is to be sent to MSJF.

    • Requested date of tree planting

    • Planting Request - whether MSJF will plant or just set the tree

  2. A confirmation email providing an acceptance or denial of the request, as well as specific details of the event, will be provided to the interested party after the online form is submitted.

  3. The MSJF grounds crew will order the tree and plaque and will dig and set the tree.

    • A tree dedication ceremony may be held and the tree may be planted by those at the ceremony. Otherwise MSJF will plant the tree.

    • Coordination of a tree dedication ceremony must be done with MSJF prior to the tree planting.
