Fire Pit Usage

A fire pit, four feet in diameter, has been established just west of St. Joseph Hall and north of the Novitiate in the lower mulberry tree grove. Below are the terms of use, some of which are mandated by the Beavercreek Fire Department (BFD):

  1. Users of the fire pit should be sponsored and supervised by one of the entities on the Mount Saint John Campus (i.e., MEEC, Meyer Hall, NACMS, QAC, Marianist Novitiate, Marianist Mission, Bergamo Center and Gallery Saint John). Supervision means a member of the sponsoring entity must be in visual contact of the fire at all times.

  2. The Director of Mount Saint John Facilities should be contacted to schedule the use of the fire pit (937-429-0795). The Director will then inform the rest of the campus of the particulars. Scheduling of the fire pit must be completed at least two days prior to usage to allow for proper notification of the campus and supplying the firewood.

  3. Users of the fire pit must contact the BFD Dispatch (937-426-1211) at least one hour before the fire is to be lit. This information will prevent falsely dispatched fire equipment (BFD rule).

  4. Fires may last up to three hours maximum and must be contained within the established fire ring (BFD rule).

  5. Only natural materials may be burned (e.g., untreated wood). Such things as chemically treated materials, tires, plastics, synthetics, Styrofoam, glass, or old furniture may not be burned (BFD rule).

  6. Because of local quarantines preventing the movement of firewood into or out of certain Southwestern Ohio counties, no firewood may be brought on campus. Enough wood for a 3-hour fire will be provided by Mount Saint John Facilities (MSJF). Downed wood near the fire pit area may not be burned.

  7. MSJF will provide sufficient amounts of water to extinguish the fire when use is finished. Users must extinguish the fire with the water when finished. Additional water is available from the hose bib on the west side of Saint Joseph Hall.

  8. Use of toilet facilities is to be pre-arranged with the sponsoring Mount Saint John entity.

  9. A trash can is located at the site for refuse disposal. The MSJF grounds crew will be responsible for trash and ash removal from the fire pit area.
