Aims; To identify risks and manage them.
Types of risk:
Injury to visitors or volunteers.
Loss of support from stakeholders or funders.
Inability of management committee to function.
Incurring legal liabilty for an action or inaction.
Risk to others due to activities and management of the mount.
Damage to infrastructure.
1.Injury to visitors or volunteers: (Likely, minor to severe result, high risk)
Publicize the "safety issues" below.
Have a 1st aid kit available and trained staff.
Have children under supervision of teacher or parent.
The mountain only open with staff present.
keep a register of visitors.
Keep tracks clear and marked.
Control vehicle access past the car park and only use approved drivers and 4wd vehicles.
Produce an "event risk management plan" when involved in events on the mount.

The Mount is closed on Total Fire Ban and days of severe weather.
Mount Elephant tracks are very steep and uneven. so: It is a mountain, not a walk in the park. Keep to marked tracks.
There is a risk of tripping or falling over. Wear stout boots. Walk carefully and do not run.
There is a risk of rolling rocks. Do not walk downhill of others.
The complete circuit is about 2 km of hard walking. People with heart and breathing problems take care.
The weather is usually windy and often hot, cold or raining. Dress accordingly and carry water and food and clothing.
The western slope is very steep. You may fall off a cliff. Do not cross to the west of the rabbit fence, and keep to tracks.
However, the experience is sensational and the views are stunning!!

Communicate often with stakeholders. Be reliable. Get feedback.
Use a range of funders. Abide by their criteria.
Anticipate problems and work around them.

Due to dispute, loss of motivation, loss of members..........
Keep recruiting new and diverse members.
Arrange activities to be of interest to diverse people.
Run meetings and activities in an effective and enjoyable manner.

Keep aware of legal situation and abide by it.
Maintain insurance.
Produce an "event risk management plan" when involved in events on the mount.

Spray drift, escape of fire, vehicle accident, etc.
Maintain insurance,
Produce and abide by codes of conduct for spray, vehicles, fire, etc.
Produce and abide by vehicle code of conduct.
Notify Trust for Nature (who hold the insurance) of any activity which they should know about.
Abide by Trust for Nature restrictions on activities. (Chainsaws, etc.)
6. Damage to infrastructure: (Likely, minor to major result, moderate risk)
Fire, vandalism, accidental damage (falling rocks)
Maintain clear areas around buildings.
Insurance cover.
Security cameras
Committee on hand during open days.
No buildings near steep slopes.
Vehicle Code of Conduct:
No unauthorized vehicles past the lower gate.
Speed limit of 40kph on the access track from the highway.
Only approved drivers and 4wd vehicles to the top gate.
No passengers from the crater to the summit, and vehicles only for maintenance and management activities.
