Fall Trap Shoot
Izaak Walton League will kick off the Fall Trap Shoot on Thursday, September 6. We will provide basic instruction in the game of traps and shooting will be free for the kick off. We encourage anyone interested to attend—women shoot traps as well as men. We will continue shooting every Thursday through October.
A round of trap consists of 25 shots with up to 5 shooters. Ours is a trap simulation because our trap thrower does not oscillate to throw the bird at different random angles to the shooter. We change the angle each week and hope to be able to afford an ATA trap machine someday. After 9/6 the cost will be $5 per round of 25 (1 box) of shells. Izaak Walton League provides the clay.
You need to bring: Shotgun; a box of target shells in number 7 or 8 shot in gauge to match your shotgun; Hearing and eye protection. If you don’t have a shotgun contact Tom Roat and he’ll make arrangements for you to use one on 9/6. You can purchase shells at WalMart and the price less than $6 for box of 25 shells.
If you would like to get a head start there are videos on YouTube—search for trap shooting tips.
Come on out and blast some birds!

MOUNTAINEER CHAPTER HOSTS YOUTH AIR RIFLE SHOOT (FROM WBOY-TV WEBSITE)
BEVERLY -
The Mountaineer Chapter of the Izaak Walton League of America hosts youth air rifle shoots a few times a year hoping to get kids outside.
One of these shoots was held on Sunday at the Tygart Valley Muzzleloaders Club in Beverly.
"I think it's important to get them out, get them outdoors. Get them away from the video games and the TV's. Get them out and let them enjoy nature a little bit," said Bruce Evans, with the Mountaineer Chapter of the IWLA.
The shoot was open to the public, but many of the kids there were from the West Virginia Children's Home.
Members of the U-S-S West Virginia were visiting the home for the week, and brought the kids to the shoot. They try to do lots of different activities with the kids, but mostly they just try to be there for them.
"If nothing else we just go over and hang out with them. Throw around the football in the yard, they have the swimming pool open now. Just hang out, play cards, whatever, just try to be a positive role model to them," said Jim Shiffer, with the USS West Virginia.
The kids could also fish in addition to shooting air rifles, and 22 caliber rifles. After many rounds of shooting door prizes such as new fishing poles, and tackle boxes were given away.
The children from the home said it was really fun to get outside and do something different.
"I think just getting to be with everybody, getting to see everybody's strength's and what they can do. We had a blast fishing earlier too," Megan Hanna said.
The next Mountaineer Chapter of the Izaak Walton League of America youth air rifle shoot will be May 19th

THIS WAS THE FIRST TIME SOME OF THE KIDS HAD TRIED THEIR HAND AT FISHING. AFTER A LUNCH PROVIDED BY THE MOUNTAINEER CHAPTER AND PREPARED AND SERVED BY CHAPTER MEMBERS THE KIDS WERE INVITED TO SHOOT AIR RIFLES. THE SHOOT WAS NON-COMPETIVE, JUST FOR FUN ACTIVITY. AT THE SAME TIME THE KIDS WERE BRIEFED ON SAFE SHOOTING PRATICES, SHOOTING RANGE ETIQUETTE, AND SAFE GUN HANDLING.
ALLTHE KIDS ARE BETWEEN THE AGES OF 14-17 AND ARE WARDS OF THE STATE. MOST COME FROM TROUBLED HOMES OR HAVE HAD SOME DESCIPLINARY PROBLEMS IN THEIR PAST. THESE KIDS WERE VERY APPRECIATIVE, WELL BEHAVED AND IT WAS PLEASURE TO HOST THESE KIDS AND LET THEM ENJOY A DAY ON CLUB PROPERTY.

Romney School D&B JAKES Day, JUNE 1, 2012
Mountaineer Chapter Members, and Randolph County HOFNOD Committee Members, Ray Mearns and Bruce Evans spent the day at the Romney School for the Deaf & Blind JAKES Day with the Randolph County HOFNOD Committee's fishing simulator. For some of the kids, this is the only opportunity to experience the feel of catching a large fish. As always the kids were thrilled to have the simulator there, and the Mountaineer Chapter members enjoy the day as much or more than the kids.
Mountaineer Chapter Scholarship Program-------Vic Thompson, Chairman
This is one of the older programs sponsored by the Mountaineer Chapter. Each year the chapter awards four scholarships to deserving students, with each scholarship being worth $1000.00. $500.00 is awarded to the students at the beginning of the school year, and the second half of the money is awarded at mid-school year. The plan is to award scholarships to two graduates from high school and two to students currently attending college. Exceptions are made when no qualified students are available in the different categories. A point system is used to identify the most qualified students, and preference is given to students majoring in conservation and environmental sciences. Each recipient must be a full-time student and maintain a 2.5 grade-point average. Each scholarship recipient is to make a written report or give an oral presentation at an Izaak Walton League meeting at the end of each school year. Click the Scholarship Application under Navigation to see an example or download a copy of the application.

WV Division Nat. Res., Law Enforcement Section donates fishing equipment to the Mountaineer Chapter IWLA
NEWS RELEASE FROM THE WVDNR
POACHERS TOOLS RECYCLED TO PROVIDE CHILDREN WITH THE CHANCE TO ENJOY THE GREAT OUTDOORS!
The West Virginia Division of Natural Resources, Law Enforcement Section, District 3 was pleased to announce the donation of 43 fishing rods and reels to the Mountaineer Chapter of the Izaak Walton League. The Mountaineer Chapter has been heavily involved with the state's Natural Resources Police Officers in providing children with the opportunity to enjoy hunting and fishing through Youth Conservation Days, Jakes Day Programs and HOFNOD (Hooked On Fishing Not On Drugs) activities.
The WV Division of Natural Resources Police Officers regularly impound and/or seize fishing equipment from people they find in violation of our Natural Resources laws. If the suspects cited for these violations are not repeat offenders, the property taken is returned after the court proceedings and fines are paid. Many of these people do not return to pick up their property and the property may not be returnable to repeat offenders.
According to state law, after 6 month the property is considered abandoned, and forfeited to the Treasurers Office for disposal. Property found to be of value is reported on the required paperwork and may be donated to non-profit organizations.
The Law Enforcement Section of the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources and non-profit organizations they work with believe it would be a terrible waste to dispose of such property in the local landfill when it can be better used to promote hunting and fishing by the youth of the great State of West Virginia. In most cases this property is utilized by these non-profit organizations to introduce the state's youth to outdoor sporting programs. The Division of Natural Resources Police Officers find it very rewarding to provide an opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors to the children of WV.
