The official currency in Romania is the Romanian "leu or RON" – 1 leu = app. 0.25 €. Payments can be made either with credit cards, or cash; for payments in cash, only the “leu” is accepted.

Rates can be as low as 1 Euro depending on how much time in advance you make your reservation (airport taxes not included), but you will pay most likely between 100 and 150 Euro per person return, if you book it a few months in advance.

By plane: Romania’s international airports are: Bucharest – Otopeni, Constanta – Mihail Kogalniceanu, Timisoara, Cluj Napoca, Sibiu and Targu Mures. The cheap air carriers Blue Air, Wizzair, Ryan Air Sky-Europe and Germanwings are flying from a lot of European airports to Bucharest, Cluj Napoca, Sibiu, Timisoara and Targu Mures.
How to get to Romania
By road: the main access points into Romania are: Berlin, Warsaw, Budapest-Petea E81; Vienna, Prague, Budapest-Bors E60 or Nadlac E64 or Varsaud E671; Trieste, Belgrade-Moravita E70 or Portile de Fier E70; Athens, Tirana, Sofia-Giurgiu E85; Istanbul, Sofia-Vama Veche E87; Moscow, Kiev, Chernovitz-Siret E85.
All roads are marked in accordance with international regulations. Driving is on the right side of the road and overtaking on the left. If you choose to come by car to Romania, bring your driving license, car papers and green card with you.

Romania continues to be one of Europe´s few bargain destinations, and travellers will find costs considerably lower than they would at home.
Average three-star guesthouse: 20 – 40 € / double room / night.
Average three-star hotel: 35 – 60 € / double room / night.
Eating out: decent two-course meal, a glass of wine or beer included: 6 - 12 €.
100 km train trip (second class): 5 €.
Coffee: 1 €.
Beer: 0.5 l.: 1 – 1.5 €.
Gasoline: 1 l.: 1 – 1.5 €.
Practical information
Visa: Since the 1st of January 2007 Romania is member of the EU. EU citizens and the Americans can stay, visa free, for up to 90 days.
You will have network coverage for your mobile phone almost all over Romania. The largest networks are Vodafone, Orange and Telekom.
In all the big towns you will find plenty of ATMs, and you can change your traveler cheques in most banks.
Cash money can be changed in most banks or at the exchange offices (casa de schimb or schimb valutar). The exchange offices are safe and offer often better rates than the bank. Neither the exchange offices, nor the banks, charge commission.
Never exchange on the street.
