Having been involved with the Tertiary Sector since 1985 I have can offer a unique mix of Learning, Teaching, Institutional and Tertiary experience with:
· Roles including Tutor, Lecturer, Associate Professor, and Staff Development Officer.
o I have been involved with students with a wide variety of support needs. Understanding the different ways students learn, the influence of their personal lives, and abilities is an important part of being a reflective practitioner.
o I have had experience with:
§ A diverse range of learners (certificate, degree, diploma, postgraduate, masters, tertiary staff).
§ A wide range of assessment techniques across multiple levels (2-9).
§ A wide range of delivery techniques (face-to-face, blended, online, remote).
· I can demonstrate evidence based sustained high quality teaching
o In 2012 I received the EIT’s CEO Teaching Excellence Award and EIT sponsored work into developing a teaching portfolio for the 2013 Ako Aotearoa Tertiary Teaching Excellence Awards (available online in my teaching and research portfolio – link below).
o In 2010 I received the EIT Teaching & Learning Educational Technology Award
· I have a strong research portfolio in Digital Learning Technologies
o My PhD thesis (2009) developed Web based frameworks for Knowledge capture technology to support teachers (and therefore learners) in a blended environment.
o I was rated in both the 2006 and 2013 PBRF rounds.
o I have attended and presented at many National and International Conferences in Digital Learning (refer to the personal profile link included at the end). In 2016 I attended the Australasian Society for Computers in Learning in Tertiary Education (ASCILITE) Conference in Adelaide.
o I have been Executive Editor for the NZ Journal of Applied Computing and Information Technology.
o I have been executive editor for Proceedings of New Zealand Applied Computing and Information Technology Conference run by CITRENZ (a collection of Tertiary Institutes in New Zealand).
o I am a reviewer for a number of Learning technology publications.
o I was appointed Associate Professor in 2011.
o I have received research awards, such as: 2005 (Inaugural) EIT Chief Executive’s Research Excellence Award, and for research papers presented at Conferences.
· I have had monitoring and strategic roles
o I have been a member of several institutional committees at EIT: Treaty Monitoring Unit (Held position of Chair), Teaching and Learning Forum, Strategic research Forum, CEOs Strategic research committee.
o Up until 2017 I was Postgraduate coordinator for Postgraduate Diploma in IT and Masters in IT.
o I have been involved with NZQA for many years.
Pre 2016 was on may L7 Computing/IT Qualification monitoring visits - with a senior NZQA evaluator.
In 2016 was on the Postgraduate and Masters in Applied IT degrees for Wintec. I have been appointed as their ongoing degree monitor. In 2012 I was EIT staff representative for the accreditation of the Bachelor of Teaching (Primary).

o I have had many years as an EIT Staff Appraiser – a role that assisted academic staff going for promotion.
o I have been on interview panels for staff, for example: the appointment of the Faculty of Business and Computing Professor.

o I have/have been a member of national and international Computer Societies: NZ IITP (formerly NZCS), Certified IT Professional, Member of Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), Member of IEEE
o I have been trained as a Secondary School Teacher, and have papers towards Certificate in Adult Teaching.
· I have strong academic ties with tertiary study
o My first and second degrees are both from Victoria University BSc (Mathematics) and BSc (hons) -Information Science. My Doctorate is from Massey University.
· I am highly skilled in the use of Digital Technologies and Digital Learning technologies.
o I have taught a variety of Computing skills at Certificate and Degree level, including core skills (Office products), Web, Multimedia, Digital Learning technologies, Data and Database Management Systems, Ethics, Hardware, Training.
o I have taught at postgraduate level, including Digital Learning Technology, Research in IT and Social Impact of IT.
o I integrate technologies into my teaching including the Institutes Learning management system (Moodle), Office technology (Word, PowerPoint), Cloud tools (Blogs, wikis, Google documents), Webinar systems (Adobe Connect), available on a wide variety of hardware platforms (including mobile).
· I have been involved in staff training and development
o In Semester 2, 2015 I held a shared part time role as Staff Development Officer for EITs main campus.
o In 2012 I was seconded to the position of part time Staff Development Officer at Tairāwhiti Polytechnic in Gisborne (a campus that deals with primary industries).
o I have delivered the design for learning paper in the Diploma in Tertiary Learning and Teaching qualification since Semester 2, 2013.
o I have delivered many staff training courses in the use of Computer Technology.
o I presented Webinar / 21st Century teaching using Webinar technology to a full staff meeting.
o I have presented computer technology related seminars to colleagues in faculty meetings.
o I have delivered several presentations to staff on digital and 21st Century Learning and Teaching.
· I have been involved in external consultancy
o In 2013 I was invited to Dhaka, Bangladesh as a keynote presenter in a seminar “Academic Development & Strategy in Technology” by the International Resource Development Corporation (iRDC) a Hastings based holding company developing a Technology solution for the Universities. This Seminar was attended by members of the Bangladesh University grants committee, the Secretary and undersecretary of ICT and many University representatives. It is my understanding that a contract for an initial phase has been signed with one of the Universities, with others watching the outcome.
o I have been on panels for NZQA.
I have taught a wide range of programs, from Diploma to Masters, encompassing a full range of assessment types including: Competency based (National Qualifications Framework - I have been an NZQA moderator); Diploma in ICT, with an 80% pass requirement), degree level and postgraduate achievement based assessment with a 50% pass requirement (in some cases teaching to all three programmes on the same day). I have also taught students from other faculties, including Horticulture/Agriculture (at BoP Polytechnic), and Computer Aided Design. From Semester 2 2013 I taught the Diploma in Tertiary Teaching students to academic staff and a research methods paper to Graduate Diploma and Masters computing students. For staff involved in research I have personal knowledge having successfully completed my PhD while working full-time in a tertiary environment. More recently I have been supporting other staff as they seek to improve their qualifications and build their research abilities. Several of my students have been library staff as they have upskilled their web and digital learning technologies.
I have been an academic peer appraiser for many years, and have maintained a steady career progression being appointed a Principal Academic Staff Member (PASM) from 2003-2011 (including have a reassessment in 2008), and an Associate Professor in November 2011.
I have recognised research skills, having completed my PhD, and hold a PBRF rating.
I can offer a significant amount of Institutional knowledge gathered over the past 36 years, from a “coal-face” teaching perspective, a researcher (completing PhD), working full time while studying part time (for PhD), an academic staff understanding (as staff development officer and appraiser) through to the working with management as part of many committees (strategic research, CEO research advisory, peer appraiser, Teaching and Learning group, Treaty Monitoring group, EIT Web Advisory Group, Research).
I have local, national and international interests. At a National level, I am on the Research and Support Working group for CITRENZ (formerly NACCQ), was Executive Editor of the Journal of Applied Computing and Information Technology, and executive-editor of the conference proceedings, and have maintained international contacts through my PhD supervisor formerly in charge of the international research group (iCORE) centred at Athabasca University in Canada, and more recently at the University of North Texas. I am a reviewer for many Journals and Conferences specifically in the field of Education Technology.
I am an enthusiastic person, willing to adapt and learn new skills. I believe that human relationships are pivotal in establishing good systems and strive to maintain a high level of contact with all staff, academic, administrative and support throughout the institute. I am a reflective practitioner, and I have a desire to help people achieve their full potential.
