I am a former Information Technology lecturer with research interests in Digital Learning Technologies and have been involved in the Tertiary Sector for over 39 years. I offer a unique mix of Learning, Teaching, Institutional and Tertiary experience, and have been employed as a full-time staff member by the Bay of Plenty Polytechnic (1985-93) and the Eastern Institute of Technology (EIT) (1993-2017).
In January 2017 I resigned as a full-time lecturer at EIT (I held the position of Associate Professor) and have been contracting to multiple tertiary providers and NZQA, as follows:
2017-2020 EIT (Hawkes’ Bay) for components in the Bachelor of Computing (Levels 5-7) and achelor of Business (L7 Project Supervision).
Since late 2017, TANZ eCampus as a facilitator and Subject Matter Expert (SME) in components for NZ Certificate in Computing (Intermediate User - Level 3), New Zealand Certificate in Information Technology Essentials (Level 4), and NZ Certificate in Adult and Tertiary Teaching (Level 5) and in 2019 NZ Diploma in Business (Level 7).
Since Semester 1, 2018 Open Polytechnic for their Level 7 Bachelor of Information Technology (OP7090) Fundamentals of Interaction Design (BIT 792) component, and 2019 Level 7 Bachelor of Information Technology (OP7091) Current and Emerging Technologies (BIT705).
Since 2017 I have been contracting to NZQA. Between 2017 and 2018 the main role was Level 7 Information Technology monitor, and since late 2019 have been a Panel Chair for New Programmes. Since 2016 have been Postgraduate degree monitor for Wintec’s Postgraduate Diploma in Applied Informatics (PGDipAppI) (Level 8), Master of Applied IT (MAppIT), Postgraduate Diploma in Applied IT (PGDipAppIT) programme, and the Postgraduate Certificate in Applied IT (PGCertAppIT)).

My roles have including teaching Information Technology to a diverse range of learners, including certificate, degree, diploma, postgraduate, masters, and tertiary staff. I have used a wide range of assessment techniques across multiple levels (2-9), and a wide range of delivery techniques (face-to-face, blended, online, remote). My preferred style is blended, with extensive use of online resources and project-based learning.
I have also taught components of the Diploma of Tertiary Learning and Teaching, and currently the Certificate in Adult Tertiary Teaching (CATT) L5, with eCampus. I was seconded to the position of part time Staff Development Officer at Tairāwhiti Polytechnic in Gisborne (2012) and EIT in Taradale (2015).
I am highly skilled in the use of Digital Technologies and Digital Learning technologies and have taught a variety of Computing skills at Certificate, Degree and Postgraduate level. This includes core skills (Office products), Web, Multimedia, Digital Learning technologies, Data and Database Management Systems, Ethics, Hardware, Training, and at the postgraduate level Digital Learning Technology, Research in IT and Social Impact of IT.
I am able to integrate technologies into my teaching including the Learning management systems (Moodle), Office technology (Word, PowerPoint), Cloud tools (Blogs, wikis, Google documents), Webinar systems (Adobe Connect, Zoom, Skype, Google meet, Microsoft Teams), and ensure they are available on a wide variety of hardware platforms (including mobile).

My qualifications include a PhD in Information Systems (2009) and a BSc (hons) in Information Science (1979). I also have a Teachers College Diploma, Diploma in Teaching and Diploma in Tertiary Teaching (Stage 1).

My PhD thesis (2009) developed Web based frameworks for Knowledge capture technology to support teachers, and learners in a blended environment. I have continued to research and publish at many National and International Conferences in Digital Learning Technologies. I was rated in both the 2006 and 2013 PBRF rounds. To contribute to the research environment, I have been executive editor for several Conference Proceedings and Journals, and review for many National and International publications. I was an Associate Professor for EIT (2011-2017).
In the Educational Technology domain for the 2012-2017 period I have been author or co-author for 3 book chapters, 1 journal, 3 international and 7 National Conferences, plus editor for 7 publications. In addition, I review for many International publications.
From 2018 I continue to Internationally review book chapters and Journal submissions.

I have been on many committees at EIT including: Treaty Monitoring Unit (Held position of Chair), Teaching and Learning Forum, Strategic research Forum, CEOs Strategic research committee. Further, I have been Postgraduate coordinator for Postgraduate Diploma in IT and Masters in IT ( -2017), and an EIT Staff Appraiser.
I have been/am also a Monitor for many IT programmes in NZ, including Wintec’s Postgraduate and Master of Applied Informatics and Information Technology, and several Auckland Private Training Establishments (PTE)’s for Level 7 Information Technology Diplomas.

I have received awards for both my teaching and research, including, EIT’s CEO Teaching Excellence Award (2012), and the EIT Teaching & Learning Educational Technology Award (2010). I have received research awards, including the inaugural EIT Chief Executive’s Research Excellence Award (2005), and for published/presented research.
