Tip 5: The Advance Search option

Now you have a good understanding of how to search the SJSU OneSearch catalog but you would like to limit your search even more. This is where the Advance Search option comes in. It is located on the far right side of your search field.

Click on the Advance Search link on the far right side of your search field to access the available options.

  • You get the same options of limiting your search to SJSU collections, all of the CSU collections of just articles.
  • You get additional options such as selecting the Boolean operators instead of typing it in manually, and adding a new line to your search.
  • You get to choose which field you would like to search in such as title, author, call number etc. instead of a Keyword search which is the default search field in the basic search.
  • You get to choose the type of material you would searching for such as articles, books, images, journal articles, etc.
  • You get to limit your search by publication year or a specific time period.

For the purpose of this tip, I want to search for books on Psychology and Children that are available through all of the CSU campuses and I would limit my search to tittles with these search terms. I would want the book to be published between 2012-2013.
