Event Data Recorder Retrieval and Imaging School

Summary

Extraction of data stored in a crashed vehicle’s control module can provide valuable information and support a reconstructionist’s investigation. This comprehensive 40-hour course will teach the student all the latest advancements in EDR technology and expose them to the systems currently available for collecting data from systems in both standard and commercial motor vehicles.

The nomenclature associated with accelerometer data and the history of its development will be discussed. The student will learn the various techniques used to power up an EDR and how to remove the unit from a damaged vehicle. As part of this training, the reconstructionist will be shown how to retrieve a wealth of information such as vehicle speed, engine speed, throttle percentage, airbag deployment command information and more, following the vehicle manufacturer’s recommended practices.

• Passenger vehicle data

• Commercial motor vehicle data

• EDR extraction techniques

• Retrieving and storing data

• Field inspection

Prerequisite: Students must have successfully passed a Level II - Advanced Crash Investigation course to be eligible to attend.

Attire, Costs and Other Requirements

Students will need to bring note taking materials, a hi-liter and a scientific calculator. 

Students will need a laptop computer to use for course work during and after class. Students will also need to bring their department's EDR equipment and computers.  

Dress is professional casual.
