The Morristown High School Marching Colonials are one of the oldest student activities at the school. The band performs at all varsity football games, school pep rallies, parades, and other various community events. In addition the band performs its halftime show at various Marching Band competitions throughout the Tri-State Area. In recent years the band has performed at Metlife Stadium, Rutgers Stadium, and J. Birney Crum Stadium. Its purpose is to not only present a high caliber musical performance but also to represent the school and town with the utmost pride and respect.
THE MARCHING BAND is unlike any other sport or activity at MHS. No cuts, no bench, no 2nd string, no Freshman team, no Junior Varsity. From day 1 EVERY SINGLE STUDENT is a fully contributing member of our ensemble.
THE MARCHING COLONIALS is made up of different sections including:
BAND: All standard band instruments are played with French Horns and euphoniums being turned into mellophones and marching baritones.
DRUMLINE: The marching percussion section of the band including snare, tenor, and bass drums.
PIT PERCUSSION: The front ensemble of the band includes all large percussion instruments too big to march such as marimba, xylophone, timpani, chimes, etc. It also includes drum set, piano, guitar, and bass.
COLOR GUARD: The color guard adds a visual component to the band comprised of dance and rhythmic gymnastics combined with the manipulation of flags, rifles, and sabers.
There is no bench in Marching Band, no second string, and no JV squad. Every member of the band is critical to the ensemble and vital to it’s success. All members receive their Varsity Letter after one complete season of participation.
Leading and directing Marching Band is Mr. David Gallagher. He can be contacted via email at david.gallagher@msdk12.net for more information.
The Winter Guard is a performance based group that incorporates dance and rhythmic gymnastics with flags, rifles, and sabers. Student rehearse 2-3 nights a week from November-April and routinely compete throughout the tri-state area.
The Morristown High School Winter Guard takes it's Color Guard skills indoors during the winter months and competes in the Mid-Atlantic Indoor Network (www.mainguards.com). If you have any questions please reach out to our director Meghan Aitken at Meghan.Hefferan@msdk12.net
The Maroon & White Music Boosters run quite a few fundraisers throughout the Marching Band season that require student and parent involvement. Donating the $20 yearly membership fee if your kid is participating in music is another great and easy way to help fundraise.
