Choirs

Welcome to our Choirs

For those students that love to sing and explore their voices togeter with their fellow students Morristown High School offers them many wonderful possibilities. Singers from all grades and ability levels are welcome to join our Concert Choir. Whereas Chorale and Mixed Chorale are auditioned ensembles only.

Other small, co-curricular choral ensembles will be established on an “as programmed” basis in order to provide opportunities to perform a wide variety of advanced chamber repertoire – vocal jazz, barbershop, pop a cappella, madrigals, 20th century classical works, etc.

Ensembles will be established by audition depending on the selected repertoire. Audition dates & preparatory materials will be advertised to the entire student body. Students do not have to be in a curricular course to participate in a co-curricular ensemble (though it is strongly suggested). Rehearsals will take place after school hours. All members of the ensemble are expected to attend every rehearsal, and to attend the performance for which the ensemble was created.

Our choirs are lead by Ms. Christine Scott.

BIO - CHRISTINE SCOTT

Miss Christine Scott has been the Director of Choirs at Morristown High School since April 2021. She graduated from Rutgers University summa cum laude with a Bachelors in Music Education in 2012 (just one year before Mr. Gallagher!). Though originally a clarinet player, Miss Scott has been teaching middle school and high school choirs for over a decade. At MHS, she also teaches piano classes. Miss Scott has professional working proficiency in Spanish and enjoys practicing language-learning with MHS's large ELL population. She is a fan of EDM festivals, free-form public radio station WFMU, obscure local history and big dangly earrings. In her spare time, Miss Scott likes to ride her motorcycle and snuggle with her cat Leo.

Curricular Choir Classes

Concert Choir

Concert Choir is a full-year elective performance class for students in Grades 9-12. This course is for all students who are interested in singing and who wish to perform in a vocal music ensemble. Students will develop both their individual and ensemble vocal techniques through the rehearsal of historically, culturally, and technically diverse repertoire. Students in this course will perform at concerts and various events throughout the school year. Because this is a performance-based class, students are expected to attend and perform in every performance scheduled for the ensemble. Students in this course must attend a pull-out, rotating lesson period for approximately 20 minutes once a week.

Treble Chorale and Mixed Chorale

Chorale is a full-year elective performance class for students in Grades 9-12. Membership is by audition, at the discretion of the director. This course is designed for students who have demonstrated an advanced level of interest, learning and achievement in vocal music performance. Students will develop both their individual and ensemble vocal techniques through the rehearsal of challenging historically, culturally and technically diverse repertoire. Students in this course will perform at concerts and various events throughout the school year. Because this is a performance-based class, students are expected to attend and perform in every performance scheduled for the ensemble. Students in this course must attend a pull-out, rotating lesson period for approximately 20 minutes once a week. Students in Treble Chorale and Mixed Chorale are automatically enrolled in the Honors Music Program.

Co-Curricular Choral Ensembles

Morristown HS Glee Club

The Morristown HS Glee Club is a “come all” group for MHS students that rehearses on a few select dates in the spring. You do NOT have to be a current choir member to join the Glee Club and there is NO audition. This group sings popular & secular repertoire arranged for voices that can sing in the tenor, baritone & bass range (click here for information/sound examples in English and Spanish). Glee Club members may also audition to take the Mixed Chorale class (Concert Choir A H) next year, if interested. Glee Club is oriented towards developing strength of confidence and singing skills. (It will also be really fun!

The Honors Music Program

The overall goal of the Honors Music Program is to provide high achieving students with additional musical experiences and projects in an advanced setting. The program seeks to develop and enrich student’s performance capabilities, musical perceptivity, artistic sensitivity, and overall musicianship. An honor student’s portfolio is comprised of various ensemble experiences and activities, some of which are assigned, some of which are selected. Over the course of the year, students are expected to complete various written reflective assignments, prepare audition materials for competitive regional ensembles, and give several solo performances.
