Course Description:
This course is a survey, largely historical, of the world’s most venerable social and political philosophies. It is infused with interdisciplinary and intercultural insights, feminist perspectives, and a full range of critical ethical interests and issues. It considers the philosophical strengths of classical and traditional approaches as these respond to the central challenges of ancient, medieval, modern, and contemporary times. It also explores underlying intellectual questions and crises as well as oftentimes marginalized cultural alternatives in order to enhance critical social thought and to gauge the emancipatory prospects and possibilities for future political action.
