Save your pictures to a folder named "P&E assignment" in your assignment folder on your computer. Make Photoshop adjustments and save your photos as .psd files. Name each image with your initials, the principle or element that it is (abbreviate the word) and the original file number. So your 1st picture for Emphasis will look like this: xxx_emph_1_3214.psd, second image: xxx_emph_2_5861.psd, etc. (Replace XXX with your initials.)
Create a P&E folder and then create a 1st 6, 2nd 6, 3rd 6 and final 10. I will grade six P & E photos at a time and then the last 10. I will not grade them if the files are not named properly, not Photoshopped or if the assignment is incomplete. You do not have to shoot in order. You only make 2 photos of each P & E. You cannot use photos that you've turned in previously for grading, but you may use different versions (file numbers) of those instead. You will be graded using the photo rubric.
Remember to focus, compose, get a proper exposure. When using the class cameras use Aperture or Shutter priority modes or full manual. Do not use full auto mode. If you use your own camera don't use full auto mode. If you are using your cellphone camera make sure you use the full resolution setting and email the photos as full size, otherwise we might not be able to get a very good print if your image is selected for printing or competitions.

Photo Collage Assignment
1st Collage Due: 2/28; 2nd Collage Due: 3/6 ; 3rd Collage due: 3/13
NM Core Arts Standard: Creating
300 points – 100 points for each photo collage
Objective: Understand how to use Photoshop layers & layer masking to create photo collages.
Create three (3) photo collages from your original photographs. You have to use images that you have personally taken. The newly collaged image must be created with two or more photographs. Combine the photographs creatively following the principles and elements of art. Click on this link to get background info on Layer masking: Compositing Tutorial video .
The most interesting photo collages are ones that have a theme or message, or tell a story. You have to have/use at least one layer mask for this assignment.
Basic procedures: In Photoshop open a new file with the following settings: 12x8 or 8x12 inches or larger, resolution 300ppi, color mode RGB 8 bit, background: white or transparent. Name your image: initials_photocollage_1.psd, i.e., pjh_photocollage_1.psd.
Save the images to a folder named photo collages in your assignments folder. Each collage will have its own folder. Also, put a copy of the originals that you used for the collage in the same folder. You should have a folder for each collage with a copy of the originals and the collage. Now open the two or three photos that you want to combine. Do a "command A" to select all, "command C" to copy, and "command V" to paste the photo into the other photograph or new file.
NOTE: Unless all the images are the same resolution you may have issues with pixelation. Once a new layer is added you may need to scale the layer bigger or smaller. Go to edit => transform=> scale, press and hold the shift key to keep the layer in the correct proportion. You can use the move tool to move layers around. You need to use layer masks to cut out areas of a photograph that you don’t want to show. I will demonstrate in class or go to Adobe TV to view the video tutorial Compositing Tutorial video. This technique allows you to make infinite adjustments to the photograph layer later, if needed.
DO NOT use the eraser tool to erase parts of your image!! You can use the "layer opacity" to get the desired visual interaction between the layers. You can use the adjustment layers at any time to enhance the new image. Make sure you save your new file as a Photoshop .psd file, NOT A .JPG FILE. You want to be able to make adjustments later. If you jpeg the image you will lose your layers forever.

Photoshop Cropping assignment
Objective: To know and understand how to use the crop tool for specific end uses.
Due 01/22/20
125 points, 25 point per cropped photo plus original
NM Fine Arts Standard One
Select one of your best photographs. Photoshop it and make it look the best that you can. Save it as a Photoshop file and make a copy and place the copy in a folder named “photoshop cropping.” Name it xxx_ zzzz_original.psd, (xxx are YOUR Initials, zzzz is the original file number.)
In Photoshop press the command+option+i keys to get to the image size panel. Make sure the resolution is set to 300. If it is not uncheck the resample button then change the resolution to 300ppi. This is important!!! So make sure you check. When importing cellphone photos they usually come in at 72 ppi. You need to start with 300ppi.
Using the Photoshop crop tool (W x H x Resolution in the drop-down menu) crop the image for the web: set the resolution to 72 ppi with the height and width to 4x6 inches. Adjust the crop box to where you want it, then press the return key to actually make the crop. Be sure to have the delete cropped pixels unchecked. Save the image with the name xxx_zzzz_4x6x72.jpg, (xxx are your initials, zzzz means the original file number.) Note: 72 ppi is the standard resolution for images on the Internet.
All your cropped photos will be saved as jpg files as most printing services want jpg files. Only your original will be a psd or tif file.
Now open the same original (NOT the image you just saved!!!) and crop it to 5x7 inches at 300ppi and save it with the name xxx_zzzz_5x7x300.jpg. 300 ppi’s the resolution for making inkjet or commercial prints. DO NOT use the photo you just cropped as a starting point, start with your original! Again, make sure you get the crop box to where you want it, then press the return key to actually make the crop.
Now do the same for a 8x10 inches at 300ppi photo crop. Rename it xxx_zzzz_8x10x300.jpg.
Next resize the image for your smartphone wallpaper. Check your model’s screen specs (on the Internet). And crop for your screen. More than likely it will be in pixel dimensions i.e., 640x1136x326, Make sure you set the W & H as Pixels (px) not inches (in)! Phones have different resolutions so be sure to set the resolution to your cell phone. If you do not have a cell phone use the dimensions for the iPhone 5s. Cell phones are vertical so if you chose a horizontal photo to start with it will be an extreme vertical crop, which is OK. Save this file as: xxx_5123_(size & resolution in pixels).jpg i.e. pjh_5123_1135x640x326.jpg
Always start with the original image file each time to prevent image quality issues. Make sure the resolution is set properly. Place all cropped photos plus the original in a folder named "photoshop cropping" in your assignments folder on your computer. You will have 5 photos in your folder, the original Photoshopped file plus the 4x6, 5x7, 8x10 and the cellphone photo.

All photographs must be photoshopped. Save your final 22 images to a folder named "Photo Composition 22 assignment" in your assignment folder on your computer. Make Photoshop adjustments and save your photos as .psd or .tif files. DO NOT TYPE in .psd!!!!!!! Do a File => Save As, select Photoshop file.
Name each image with your initials, the concept it is ,whether 1st or 2nd, and the original file number. Abbreviate the concept name to shorten file names (see the abbreviations above). So your photos for Asymmetrical will look like this:
xxx_asym_1_3214.psd
2nd image: xxx_asym_2_5861.psd
(Remember: Delete DSC and replace xxx with YOUR 3 initials and KEEP the original file number!)
You will have a total of 22 images in your folder. Do not create individual folders for each concept. I will not grade them if the files are not named properly or if the assignment is incomplete. You MUST Photoshop each photograph! You cannot use photos that you've turned in previously for grading, but you may use different versions of those instead. You will be graded using the photo rubric.
Remember to focus, compose and get a proper exposure. When using the class cameras use Aperture, Shutter priority modes or full manual. DO NOT use full auto mode or any of the Program modes. Stick with Aperture, Shutter or Manual exposure modes. If you use your own camera don't use full auto mode. Photographing and Processing in RAW
Due: 12/9/19
250 points, 50 points per image (5 RAW photos)
NM Visual Arts Standard 1
CCSS: SL 9-12; 4 & 5, (Speaking & Listening),
RST; 7, 9-12 (Integration of Knowledge), WHST 9-12, 1.A-E, 4
Objective: Understand photographing and processing RAW photos using Photoshop. Be able to answer this question: Why would you want to photograph in Raw mode?
After reading the RAW section in the Digital Photography Book (Chapter 4 page 79) and reviewing the "Raw Processing PDF" go out and photograph using the RAW setting on your camera. Make sure all photos turned in are well composed, in focus, properly exposed.
Procedure: Set your camera to RAW. This is in the “quality” setting on your camera. Click on the (i) button twice then toggle to the quality mode, then toggle to RAW only, always photograph with the large file size setting. Make your photographs paying attention to subject, composition, exposure, proper shutter speed, etc.
Place your photos in your photo archive. Each photo will have a file extension of .NEF if you use Nikon cameras or .ARW for Sony, .CR2 or .CRW for Canon and .ORF for Olympus cameras.
Select the best 5 photos, duplicate them and place them in a new folder named RAW before you start to process the photographs. RENAME the file BEFORE you open it up!!! Example: pjh_raw1_3423.NEF, pjh_raw2_8456.NEF, etc.
Open the 1st photo in Photoshop. It will open in Photoshop’s RAW processor. You have to make adjustments in this processor, follow the the Raw processing handout and then click on “open image”. You are now in the regular Photoshop work space. Make at least one adjustment in Photoshop then save (save as) the photo as a PSD. You will have a total of ten photos plus the .xmp files in your folder: 5 NEF files and the corresponding PSD files, plus the XMP sidecar files from the RAW processing. The RAW file name should look like this: pjh_RAW1_3423.NEF, the corresponding Photoshop file will look like this: pjh_RAW1_3423.psd and the xmp file: pjh_RAW1_3423.xmp. Remember you do not type in the file extension, you have to do a file->save as-> select Photoshop file format. I want the photographs to be well composed, have interesting subject and properly exposed and in the proper file format.
You will have three files for each photo and they should be named correctly, example for the first photo: pjh_RAW1_3423.NEF, pjh_RAW1_3423.psd, pjh_RAW1_3423.xmp
I will not grade this assignment until the Manual, A&S and Camera Op/Comp assignment are completed!

Aperture and Shutter Priority mode Camera Operation
Objective: To understand how to make well-exposed photographs using A and S modes
Due: Oct. 21st
4 photographs, 50 points per photograph, 200 points
NM Visual Arts Standard One CCSSI ELA Standards: RI 9-12: 1, 2. 3. 4
Use only cameras that have the non-zoom lens
Using the class cameras, go out and photograph the school using "Aperture and Shutter" priority exposure modes. You may use auto focus or manual focus. Make sure to check/set the camera image quality setting to FINE-LARGE. You should first set the ISO to the appropriate sensitivity for the light conditions, then make exposures using Aperture priority "A" mode — the dial on the top of the camera!
Adjust the aperture (turn the thumb dial only) to wide open f/1.8 or f/2.8 to make your photos, then make some photographs stopping down the f/stop to f/16 or f/22. What you are looking for with the wide-open f/stop is the background being out of focus. With the smaller f/stop everything should be in focus. Adjust the ISO to make sure your shutter speeds stay faster than 1/60th of a second. Keep the ISO as low as possible.
Next set the exposure mode the "S" shutter priority mode. Find something that is moving and photograph it using 1/30th of a second. Then photograph the same thing using a faster shutter speed like 1/500th.
A successfully exposed photograph should have detailed highlights, good contrast in the mid tones and some solid blacks. You should photograph more images than you need. Select the best photographs to turn in.
After making your photographs place the photos in your photo archive in a folder named by the date you photographed them: 10/1/19 for example.
Select the best for each mode for the max. and min. aperture and shutter speed and duplicate them (command d). Move the duplicates into your assignments folder and create a folder named A+S Priority mode.
Rename the files like this: For the Aperture priority photos: "your initials_ap_2.8_original#.jpg for the photo shot with 2.8 and then "your initials _ap_16_original #.jpg. For shutter priority "your initials_sp_30_3861.jpg" and "your initials_sp_500_4567.jpg".
So if I photographed the assignment my file names would look like this:
pjh_ap_2.8_3245.jpg or pjh_ap_1.8_3245.jpg for images shot wide-open
and
pjh_ap_16_3255.jpg or pjh_ap_22_3255.jpg for the images shot w/the smallest aperture. Use the aperture you used in the name, check in Bridge!
For the photo shot with shutter priority mode the file names would look like this: pjh_sp_30_3861.jpg and pjh_sp_500_4567.jpg. Use the shutter speed in the name that you used.
DO NOT delete the original file # or file extension when you rename! DO NOT TYPE .jpg!!!! DO NOT use Photoshop to correct/crop the photograph. Turn in only un-manipulated photographs.
Although I am primarily grading for proper exposure — use of correct ISO/shutter/aperture, I will also look at proper focus.
Remember: Follow all school rules when out on a photo pass! You must have your ID and the photo pass must be showing. Do not disturb other classes. You have a 30-minute time limit, And you must be back in class 10 minutes before the end of class if you sign out the last 40 minutes of class.!

Objective: To understand how to make well-exposed photographs
Due: Oct. 7th
5 photographs, 25 points per photograph, 125 points
NM Visual Arts Standard One CCSSI ELA Standards: RI 9-12: 1, 2. 3. 4
Using the class cameras, go out and photograph the school using "manual" exposure mode on the camera. You may use auto focus or manual focus. Remember you need to set and adjust three things to get a good exposure: ISO, aperture (f/stop), and the shutter. Make sure to check/set the camera image quality setting to FINE-LARGE. You should set the ISO first to the appropriate sensitivity for the light conditions, then the shutter and f/stop for the subject. A successfully exposed photograph should have detailed highlights, good contrast in the mid tones and some solid blacks. You should photograph more images than you need. Select the best-exposed photographs.
After making your photographs place the photos in your photo archive in a folder named by the date you photographed them: 9/23/17 for example. Select the best 5 and duplicate them (command d). Move the duplicates into your assignments folder and create a folder named manual camera op. Rename the 5 like this: "your initials_manual_(1-5)_original#.jpg
So if I photographed the assignment my file names would look like this: pjh_manual_1_3245.jpg, pjh_manual_2_3255.jpg, and so on.
You have a 30-minute time limit, And you must be back in class 10 minutes before the end of class!
