Ever wonder how you can have a young looking face, even when you’re 50? There is no way to slow down time, and aging is inevitable. The key is to take care of your skin now. Don’t wait until it’s too late. Many young women take their soft, smooth-looking, wrinkle free face for granted. Obviously there are factors that play into gaining wrinkles, such as gravity; but this doesn’t have to make much of a difference if you take better care of your skin when you’re young. Experts have told WebMD “many of us are losing the wrinkle battle, watching helplessly as the glow of youth goes on the dimmer switch.” This is either due to the lack of knowledge about properly taking care of your skin, or just a habit of pure negligence.
I am not trying to tell you to save up a large sum of money to pay for skin rejuvenating treatments. There are habits that you can implement into your life today, that will put a huge stump in front of the ageing fairy’s path. WebMD gives 23 tips in their article, 23 Ways to Reduce Wrinkles, but I’m going to focus on the first 12. These 12 tips are cost free, and should be a regular part of your life.
1. This is probably the most obvious, but avoid the sun. Plenty of studies have proven that this is truly the number one cause of wrinkles.
2. Wear sunscreen, I beg you! Not only is this habit going to prevent you from being diagnosed with skin cancer, but it will also keep your skin looking wrinkle-free.
3. No smoking, this is also linked to many other health benefits. Smoking releases and enzyme that breaks down collagen and elastin, the most important makeup of skin.
4. Get enough sleep. With enough sleep, your body will be able to produce more HGH. HGH helps thicken your skin so you won’t be a likely candidate for wrinkles.
5. Sleep on your back. This is for all you side and stomach sleepers. Your face becomes squished, and you will create sleep lines on your face. If there is truly no way you can possibly change the way you sleep, investing in a proper pillow might be beneficial. Elessa, from Pursebuzz, talks about how she protected her skin from her bad sleeping habits by purchasing a candy-cane shaped pillow from Bed Bath and Beyond. The pillow is neatly shaped to keep your body straight and aligned, as well as had a little notch to place your ear in the pillow, so your face doesn’t get squished when you sleep on your side.
6. Don’t squint, get sunglasses. Repetitive facial movements create grooves in the skin, which eventually turn into wrinkles.
7. Eat fish, like Salmon. It has omega-3 fatty acids, which are essential to flawless, plump, and youthful skin.
8. Eat soy. Certain properties from soy help protect and heal sun’s photoaging damage.
9. Quit the coffee, have some cocoa. A study in Journal of Nutrition that cocoa protects skin from the sun and improves skin circulation.
10. Eat more fruits and vegetables. This should be a no brainer, but just in case you didn’t know already the antioxidant compounds in these foods fight sun damage.
11. Use moisturizer. The power of a simple moisturizer will do much more than you think. Your skin will stay hydrated and moist, making fine lines and flaws look far less noticeable.
12. Last but not least, don’t go crazy with your face wash. Constant washing of the face will remove natural barrier oils and moisture that protects against wrinkles.
