SUNNEX (updated)

Sonners, Summox, Sumnex, Sennax, Sennox, Sunnix, Sunnen, Sunnuck, Sunnucks, Sunnocks, SunaxLocality: Derivative of 'Sevenoaks' in Kent, EnglandThe Sunnexes have a history themselves relating back to William Sevenoaks, Lord Mayor of London around Dick Whittington's time. (William was a pauper who was taken in by the town of Sevenoaks and he took the town's name as his own.  As an adult William prospered, was knighted and became Lord Mayor in 1418.  In recognition of that early help he endowed an almhouse and a school.  Both are still there.)   There is certainly a considerable number of people bearing these surnames today who claim descent from William who lived from 1370 to 1432.It seems likely that the surnames now found in several parts of England and overseas in a variety of forms such as Sennox, Sennax, Sennucks, Senoakes, Sunnex, Sunax, Sunnucks etc. all derive originally from the town of Sevenoaks in Kent, traditionally pronounced Sennoaks.  It has also been suggested that the Sevenoaks name in its many forms, may have been shortened in some cases to the surname Snooks.
