DECEMBER 13, 2016-A LINE OF FIRE

At the edge of Wedge Pond in Alberta, Canada’s sprawling Kananaskis Country—“K-Country” to locals—morning coaxes the sunlight forward over the ridgeline of the Canadian Rockies. “We waited patiently in the biting cold … for this phenomenon of glowing highlight [to appear] on the top of the mountain,” photographer Saleem Moopen writes. “It was a spectacular sight and worth the wait.”-PHOTOGRAPH BY SALEEM MOOPEN

JANUARY 6, 2017-BREATH OF FRESH AIR

Women in traditional clothing rest on a rough-hewn footbridge in Nubra Valley in Ladakh, India. Barren but breathtaking Ladakh (“land of high mountain passes”) is home to a predominantly Buddhist population who live according to generations-old traditions. “Dubbed ‘Little Tibet’ because of its geographical and cultural proximity to Tibet (and it also is host to many Tibetan refugees),” photographer Kieron Nelson writes, “… this austerely beautiful region is like nowhere else in India.”-PHOTOGRAPH BY KIERON NELSON

FEBRUARY 4, 2017-CATCH OF THE MORNING

A woman catches shrimp as morning dew shrouds the Quan Son lagoon in Vietnam. "Each day, she can catch up [to] two baskets of shrimp," says Your Shot photographer Quoc Loc, "and each basket can be sold for just USD $2."-PHOTOGRAPH BY QUOC LOC

DECEMBER 5, 2016-CLOSE CALL

A waterspout descends from menacing skies over the Adriatic Sea. Your Shot photographer Ivan Stulić made this image from the tiny island of Vir, Croatia. The waterspout, he says, passed “maybe 50 to a hundred meters from the boat. Luckily the boat and people inside were OK."-PHOTOGRAPH BY IVAN STULIĆ

JANUARY 13, 2017-DEAD CALM

Just as the sun rises over Lake Hintersee in Germany’s Berchtesgaden National Park, an eerie stillness hangs in the air. The “dead calm” of this winter sunrise gives “a mystic view of the mountains greeting the morning sun,” writes Your Shot photographer Gregor Thelen. “The quietness and peace is tangible in the delicate shades ... rising from the night.” The park, in Germany’s southeastern corner near the Austrian border, has been a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 1990 and is the oldest conservation area in the Berchtesgaden Alps.-PHOTOGRAPH BY GREGOR THELEN

DECEMBER 3, 2016-FIELD OF FRAGRANCE

“Incense plays an important role in Vietnamese life,” writes Tran Tuan Viet, who captured this image in Hanoi, Vietnam. “It is considered as a sacred bridge to connect the visible life of human beings and the world of heaven, earth, and gods.” The making of incense is a traditional job in Vietnam, and here a worker sits among dozens of colorful bundles of the aromatic material, carefully arranging them into bushlike shapes.-PHOTOGRAPH BY TRAN TUAN VIET
