Longhorsley Community Award 2024

In March 2024, parishioners were asked to nominate a person or organisation who they believed had enhanced the parish.

The number of nominations received determined who the deserving recipients would be. This year, we have joint Winners …. Derek Knox, Anne Peat and Jane Pringle. Our congratulations go to you all.

Parishioners who nominated the volunteers said the following kind words:

Derek Knox - has done outstanding work with the local History Society. He does much research and is always posting items of interest on the Longhorsley Facebook page.

Both Derek and the late Bill Ricalton have done a marvellous job in recording and keeping Longhorsley history alive. Their passion for the village and the characters and events that have shaped Longhorsley have been meticulously recorded.

Anne Peat & Jane Pringle - Jane and Anne volunteered to set up and run the Warm Space Coffee mornings in the Village Hall in 2022 and have continued to do so every Wednesday morning since. They put a great deal of hard work into this initiative which provides a welcoming atmosphere and is a lifeline for single households.

Anne rallied a variety of people from throughout the community to arrange the Coronation Day celebrations in May 2023.

Jane is also a driving force behind many Village Hall events and Anne is the Parish Councils representative on the VH Committee.

D-Day Anniversary 6th June 2024

Commemorating the Largest Naval, Air and Land Operation in History

We are pleased to announce that Longhorsley has been added to the list of authorities taking part in the official Beacon and Lamp Lights of Peace Lighting Ceremony to be held on 6th June. We will be holding our ceremony on the Village Green with the Beacon being lit at 9.15pm.  We will also be joining the Nation’s Tribute at that time.

Please come along and join us in remembering those who gave their lives at home and abroad during the D-Day landings, whose sacrifice enables us all to enjoy the peace and freedom we have today.

Drop in events to learn more about the Digital Switchover

Many people in Northumberland will have questions or would like to know more about the Digital Switchover. By December 2025, services that rely on the old landline system such as home phones and healthcare devices will be switched to upgraded digital landline services as part of a national switchover led by the UK telecommunications industry.

This may include: Home phones (traditional landline), Amplified phones (for those with hearing loss), Personal telecare products, Fall and motion detectors, Portable healthcare devices such as ECG or oxygen monitors.

Throughout June, BT will be heading to Northumberland where a team will be on hand to tell people about its new home phone service Digital Voice, why the change is necessary, and what it means. Please see the event information below which may be of interest to you - you don't have to pre-book, just turn up.

Morpeth - Wednesday 26 and Thursday 27 June, 10am - 4pm, Dobbies Morpeth (carpark), Heighley Gate, Morpeth, NE61 3DA.

Your County Councillor

It will only be a few months before the new Northumberland Line begins operation with twice hourly journeys from stations including Blyth and Ashington straight to Newcastle where the Metro can be joined. Ticket fares are looking attractive.

The line used is one that was closed over 60 years ago to passenger trains so the job of creating new stations, signalling and significant engineering has been very expensive but the Government has continued to back the scheme making this one of the best examples of public transport regeneration. The County Council has also contributed.

The cost has risen hugely because of Covid, inflation, coal shafts that were not marked on maps, a buried rubbish dump, unexploded ordnance and archaeological finds that slowed work down. Above all the flooding and awful weather this winter has hampered progress significantly.

However, the end product will be really important, opening up the south east of the County for commuters, visitors and travellers. And the proposed reduction in commuter trains from Morpeth has also been shelved after much opposition!! In the meantime please get in touch anytime if I can help with any NCC issues however small.
