As a childminder, one of the things I love most about my job is supporting children with special needs. Every child deserves a safe, nurturing environment where they can learn, grow, and feel valued. I am qualified as a Level 3 SENCo, which means I have the training and experience to understand children’s individual needs and put effective strategies in place to help them thrive.
Every child is unique, and children with special needs often have different ways of learning and interacting with the world. I always take the time to listen to parents and carers to understand each child’s needs, routines, and preferences.
I communicate regularly with parents and any professionals involved.
I observe and learn how the child interacts with their environment and peers.
I adapt my approach to suit the individual child, ensuring they feel supported.
I make sure my setting is welcoming and accessible for all children. Small changes can make a big difference:
Arranging the space so it’s safe and easy to navigate.
Providing toys and resources that can be adapted to different abilities.
Using visual supports and clear routines so children know what to expect.
Encouraging all children to play and learn together, helping them build empathy and friendships.
I plan activities that match each child’s abilities and interests.
Breaking tasks into small, achievable steps.
Offering sensory play, music, or movement activities when helpful.
Celebrating every achievement, no matter how small, with positive reinforcement.
Allowing children to take breaks or choose alternative activities if they need them.
I believe that close collaboration with parents and professionals is key to supporting children effectively.
I share updates and progress with parents regularly.
I work alongside therapists, specialists, and educators where needed.
My Level 3 SENCo qualification equips me to create strategies, adapt activities, and support children with additional needs confidently.
Every child develops at their own pace, and my role is to provide a consistent, safe environment where they can grow. I celebrate every milestone, listen carefully to their needs, and provide care that helps each child reach their full potential.
Supporting children with special needs is something I am deeply passionate about. At Little Acorns, every child is valued, supported, and encouraged to flourish in a caring, friendly environment.
