As an OSAA-sanctioned activity, Speech & Debate students in Oregon are eligible to earn varsity letters.
Because our team values community, character, and excellence, our lettering criteria are designed to recognize students who consistently demonstrate those values.
Team members in good standing* who meet at least three of the six criteria below are eligible to earn a Lincoln “L” letter:
Earn a minimum of 150 NFL points during the school year through Speech & Debate team activities only.
(Points earned through alternate activities such as Model United Nations, Mock Trial, Constitution Team, etc. do not count.)
Attend seven Speech & Debate or Student Congress tournaments during the season.
Participation in the open division by January is preferred.
Place 1st, 2nd, or 3rd at the State Qualifying Speech Tournament, or earn an alternate qualifying offer or Student Congress invitation to the State Tournament.
Place 1st, 2nd, or 3rd at the Oregon State Speech Tournament.
(This achievement counts twice toward the three required criteria.)
Place 1st, 2nd, or 3rd at a qualifying tournament for the National Speech & Debate Association National Speech Tournament.
Serve as a team officer and/or regularly volunteer within and for the team as requested by the coach.
*To be considered “in good standing,” a student must abide by the terms of the team agreement below.
