Kerry came out on top in a closely contested Irish Daily Star Div 4 League clash in Martinstown on Sunday. The Kingdom's girls brought an intensity to the contest that stifled Limerick's attacks proved the difference between the two sides.
Limerick started with the best of the early exchanges and opened the scoring when Niamh Tuite got on the end of a loose Kerry clearance and pointed from 20 yards. Kerry responded and centre-back Laura Collins put over a point from the right hand side. Collins got on the score sheet again as she pounced on a rebound after an excellent save by Laura O'Neill to find the back of the net. Kerry added two further points before half-time from frees taken by Sarah Murphy, who plays her club Camogie in Limerick with Newcastle West, to leave the score at half-time Kerry 1-3 Limerick 0-1.
LImerick closed the gap at the start of the second half after Lisa Scanlon broke through the Kerry defence from midfield and passed to Kristy Carroll who put it over the bar. Lisa got on the score sheet shortly after pointing a free to make the score Kerry 1-3 Limerick 0-3. However Kerry responded and their pressure led to two frees which Sarah Muphy converted to restore their half-time lead.
Limerick kept up the pressure and another free from Lisa Scanlon and another excellent point from play
from Niamh Tuite kept them in contention. Kerry scored again through Orla Young and Laura Collins to again restore their lead. Limerick piled on the pressure as the game went into the final stages but a super point from substitute Rebecca Noonan was to be their only reward. Final Score Kerry 1-7 Limerick 0-6.
The result still leaves Limerick very much in contention in Division 4 with games against Dublin and Meath to come. Meath are next up as they visit next Sunday 16th March time and venue tbc.
