Digital Literacy and Citizenship are one of the standards in ISTE's National Technology Standards for Teachers (NETS-T). It is critical for Professional Learning Leaders to model exemplar digital literacy and citizenship. I have made two interactive images below using ThingLink.
This interactive graphic talks about understanding Creative Commons and fair use copyright.
This next interactive graphic talks about Open Educational Resources.
Scenario 1:
According to the Copyright and Fair Use Guidelines for Teachers I can make entire copies for archive and back up, but not for each person to have a mark-up copy. I suppose that I could not stop each individual from making their own "back-up" copy but I would caution that if they did not buy it then they don't have the right to make a back up copy. The inference here is that I (the workshop moderator) own the texts not the attendees, and if I am re-using the books for multiple workshops then copying the texts more than once or twice would be a no-no.
Scenario 2:
Of course a presentation I make can be made public as long as I cross all my T's and dot my I's. If I used images from the internet I need to make sure I can reuse them for public use according to the Copyright and Fair Use Guidelines for Teachers and have cited them properly for attribution. I try to use public/free use images that are ready for use. It is sometimes difficult to NOT use Google Images for everything. I think I'll try to gather a resource page of free image websites to put as a resource on my website.
Scenario 3:
Modeling good digital citizenship is important as a PLL in all we do. Making sure we cite our sources of images as well as using music properly. If I am teaching a music class then I can, under Fair Use, make copies of the sheet music as well as the CD to help my students learn the piece. I like to cite all my sources as they occur in the presentation with a list of "resources" at the end. In my understanding, Fair Use is the ways in which I can use copyrighted materials without permission or payment.
Reflection:
This Professional Learning Leader certification is founded on the ISTE Standards for Coaches. As I think about my own digital literacy and citizenship modeling I reflect on how I can improve.
5a. Model and promote strategies for achieving equitable access to digital tools and resources and technology-related best practices for all students and teachers.
For this standard, I plan in continuing to build on my resources webpages for free and/or low cost tools for teaching. I currently have a page for OER but I could do more in building it up.
5b. Model and facilitate safe, healthy, legal, and ethical uses of digital information and technologies.
I need to be more diligent with my citing my sources in my presentations. I try but I'm not always 100% on. I need to do better at explaining how and when to use content and I'll also try to create a citing sources page as well.
5c. Model and promote diversity, cultural understanding, and global awareness by using digital age communication and collaboration tools to interact locally and globally with students, peers, parents, and the larger community.
I like to introduce tools like Zoom.us and Google Hangouts into the classroom, so students and teachers can communicate and idea exchange with others all over the country and the world. Students introduced to new areas and cultures through the power of the internet and web tools can have an empathy and new understanding for the global world.
