The 10th April, Sunday, 2011 was a special day in the calendar of the residents of Lakshmipuram. It was the celebration of the second anniversary of their children’s club, at Hemamalini Mini Mandapam.
It was an achievement of sorts as the event turned out to be a big and hugely successful one, put together by the ladies of the area.
The mothers of the area were asked to form teams and prepare the children for the anniversary celebrations. This led to a lot of activities with all mothers seeking others with similar interest, and getting their wards to practice in their houses, after discussing and getting the item ready.
The practice sessions started immediately after the exams got over in their respective schools. The last fifteen days saw a lot of interaction and excitement among both the children and the parents of Lakshmipuram. As the word spread around, more and more children came forward to participate and they were helped to find suitable groups to join, or were encouraged to form their own groups and practice.
It was a three hour event, with around 17 different performances put up on the stage by 75 children of Lakshmipuram. Programs ranging from bhajans, classical music (vocal and instrumental), kolattam, folk dance, Bharathanatyam, fusion music, skits in English and Tamil, were showcased by children of age groups from 4 yrs to 16 years.
It required enormous amount of co-ordination, co-operation and focused work from both the Lawanya volunteers as well as the mothers. There was a huge turn out of the residents of the area, as well as some well wishers from the neighbourhood areas. They all thoroughly enjoyed the variety entertainment.
Ms. Sumita Sundaram of Aavishkaar India was the chief guest who gave away the mementos to the participants.
The program left a great sense of achievement with the women residents of Lakshmipuram, who went on to prove, that in this day and age of isolation & competition thanks to TV and computers, one can still make it possible to work together and synergize to pull off an event which will bring closer not only the children but also the residents of a locality.
It can probably serve as a stimulant to those mothers/women of other localities and areas to try out something similar or perhaps, even better.
