d. How to make 22" LED TV

Here is described how to make a DIY fullHD LED TV, PC VGA, AV, HDMI, USB player, from broken 22" monitor.

To get the idea what about, before read this side, is recommended to read and understand information from this subsides

6. LCD as PC VGA,HDMI,AV,TV display TSUMV59

Sometime, when I got opportunity, I am buying some broken monitors as parts donors, many times I repair them and sometime made them usable again as my experiments :) .

Lastly I bought on Allegro (it is kind of Polish Ebay) broken monitor LG E2242 , seller wrote that electronic is completely destroyed by thunder and possible that screen also. Specification say that is HD 1920x1080 LED screen.

OK, lets open it. Indeed, electronic board was destroyed, no sign of life, so I decided to test screen and use as donor for universal LCD controller.

The screen type is LGM215AC01, so after little googling there are not any sign of datasheet for this screen.

So, I analyze LVDS cable and made measurement of GND pins in connector of screen, so I knew it is standard monitor LVDS input 2channel 8bit like that one

Screen was not working with 3.3V, so jumper was changed for 5V, at 5V screen works well.

As usually the problem is to obtain LED driver parameters, the procedure how to do that is described here (BTW on this screen)

b. step-up converter as LED driver

As there no other option, I decided to use XL6009 step-up converter universal module, as LED driver.

170mA-180mA was the current chosen for LED, so driver was set to 39.2V, at this voltage screen is very bright, the same bright level, as any other factory LED TV .

I decided to use universal LCD controller with TSUMV59 chip described here 6. LCD as PC VGA,HDMI,AV,TV display TSUMV59

Now, is time to made all parts together.

First of all, the most time consuming, was to choose where to screw controller board, finally good place was at the right of back cover.

Under controller, there are placed some foam spacers to made board a bit tide . Spacers are mounted (in Apple style) by double-side adhesive tape, than controler was screwed.

Now is time to add LVDS cables, solder LED cables to LED driver and mont LED driver by double-side adhesive tape (Apple high-tech style) at place, when is still possible potentiometer regulation through D-SUB hole.

Let made some test, what a nice surprise, excellent picture quality.

So nice colors, brightness, everything so good as in regular LED LCD TV :) .

TV works with supply power unit 12V 2A, that small power unit, directly connected to wall adapter.

The supply power unit is not even hot, it simply a bit worm after few hours of work.

Keyboard

After successful testing, I decide to use original keyboard. For that, was very helpful knowledge that controller supports A/D keyboard type (Analog to Digital converter is used at keyboard input) , what was described here 6. LCD as PC VGA,HDMI,AV,TV display TSUMV59

So I prepared two wires for keyboard and one wire for Red status LED. Also added proper resistors in series with each switch to made them work as particular functions. Status LED light "red" when device is turned OFF, when device is on, status LED is not light and only flashing when any key on remote is pressed, so indicating that remote control is working - that very good solution .

Original keyboard works perfectly as 5 keys keyboard.

Speakers, that important part of TV.

I found a pair of nice speakers from broken laptop, they play very good, so time to use them at TV.

As usually best way for mounting, is some adhesive tape. They playing very good, especially when was a bit regulated Volume curve in "service menu". Final set looks very compact and works very good.

Finally it is time to cover the electronic board.

I used that what was available at hand at home. So a plastic package of PC mouse, a black dokument cover and some double adhesive tape. Blistro was covered by black plastic, all was glued by adhesive. Pictures are self explaining.

At last, end of two days work, so time to see a movie from USB hard drive.

I exchanged this TV/monitor with my PC 22" VGA for testing, I passed FarCry4, works as good as any other VGA PC monitor :) .

Broken LG monitor about 25$ with delivery

Controller 14$

Step up converter 2$

Supply power 4$

So Total about 45$

Well, in store such similar device cost about 180$

But is not all, there was also two nice afternoons for fun and assembling :) .

And biggest advantage is, that I gave for my self guarantee for this device, till end of my life - hehehe :) .
