I was delighted to be approached by Kat Howard to deliver a session at the inaugural LitDrive conference at Aston University in July 2023. I was keen to pull together a session that focused on SEND as it's an area that isn't often tackled and, as proven by the 'standing room only' crowd there is a real thirst for practical, realistic strategies that allow you to make ambitious, difficult stuff accessible to all. My session is a product of 10 years in mainstream, 7 in SEND and now recently back in mainstream...
I will, at some point, be recording the session to make it available via LitDrive and slides are also available there (for all other sessions too) but see below. It won't necessarily make loads of sense without narration, but perhaps it will help some.
In summary - I emphasise that there are significant areas of overlapping need for different types of neurodifference (dyslexia, ADHD, autism) and therefore if we focus on reducing the processing demand of our tasks, we can make a big difference with small changes. I've got 10 strategies that I exemplify with examples of resources/student work from three units: A Christmas Carol, Rhetoric and teaching poetry.
