Kid Pix is a computer drawing program that is designed to be used with younger children. This program is primarily used with my Kindergarten and 1st grade students.
Every time that we work in Kid Pix, students must type their name with a capital letter, change the font design, size and color. They also have the option to use the bold, underline, italic and align features. This task is incorporated into each lesson so that the repetitive activity will help students become more familiar and comfortable with typing their full name and customizing their font.
Kindergarten
Kindergartners learn how to type their name with capital letter in the beginning. Then we build from there and they type a sentence, making sure that they type one space between words and add a punctuation mark at the end. Here is an example of when students begin to write sentences. Once they are done with their sentence, they always illustrate it.
Kindergartners Have a Dream
Baby Chicks
Students in kindergarten learned about baby chicks in their classroom. Each kindergarten class received 12 incubated eggs, an incubator and a brooder from Quiver Farm. The students learned many different things including how to take care of the eggs in the absence of the Mother Hen and Father Rooster. They were all very excited when their eggs hatched and they saw the baby chicks come out.
In this assignment, students had to type their name, then change the size, color and font design. Next they had to write a sentence stating something that they learned about the chicks. Students were reminded to use the correct capitalization and punctuation.
Grade 1
Students wrote a sentence about something that they like about the snow. They had to make sure that they used an upper case letter in the beginning of their sentence, one space between their words and also send their sentence with a period. Once they were done, they had to illustrate their picture using the draw tools.
After learning about insects, first graders wrote and illustrated their sentences.
Grade 2
After a snow day, 2nd graders wrote a sentence about what they liked about the snow. Then they illustrated their sentence. Click here to view a Google Slideshow of their work.
