Now we're really moving: don't forget, no school Friday or Monday for an extra long Memorial Day weekend. Information and permissions slips for our end of year trip went home. Finally, the LPTC's end of year event is coming up, and the envelopes for volunteers and donations are due at the end of this week. But please plan to attend and celebrate, with free tacos, carnival games, and more! One more thing: yearbooks are arriving! If you haven't ordered yours, do it now!

A few reminders for the week: Don't forget to purchase your yearbook ASAP, as we're in the 2nd half of May all of a sudden. The link is on the website, just below this message. Additionally, there's an LPTC meeting on Friday after school, including an officer election for the next two years of LPTC leadership. Finally, on Thursday I ask for your patience in the parking lot: Grades 5 & 6 are headed to Science Camp tomorrow, returning on Thursday. Dismissal will be just a little more complicated as we'll have a lot of sleeping bags and pillows to get into the car along with the returning campers.

May 8-12 is Teacher Appreciation Week. The best recognition is the one that comes straight from the student, but your help and facilitation and thoughtfulness are always appreciated, too, parents!

Before I forget there is no school on Monday for May Day. Other items:  It's getting hot and we're noticing a lot of students don't have water bottles. Please take care to send them with full bottles. They're really thirsty lately. Antes de que se me olvide que no hay clases el lunes por el Primero de Mayo. Welcome back! ¡Bienvenido de nuevo!

An important note for tomorrow: at drop off all students will go to the basketball court and new seating area, to get them out of the parking lot and use the new picnic area for food service. We want to continue to improve supervision and student safety. We'll also perform COVID tests Monday morning, for the first time in a while as we return from vacation.

Returning to school for the final stretch, I must remind you of a few things. I'm seeing a lot of toys coming to school. Out of concern for damage and loss in addition to equity and safety, we ask that students not bring toys from home. FYI, this includes Pokemon cards. There is too much perceived value in these shiny things, and they should stay home. The exception, as always, is when a teacher has a stuffed animal pajama day, or a bring a toy to school day.

Una nota importante para mañana: al dejar a los estudiantes, todos irán al basquetbol y la nueva área de asientos, para sacarlos del estacionamiento y usar la nueva área de picnic para el servicio de alimentos. También realizaremos pruebas de COVID el lunes por la mañana, por primera vez en mucho tiempo ya que regresamos de vacaciones.

Volviendo a la escuela para los meses finales, debo recordarles algunas cosas. Veo que vienen muchos juguetes a la escuela. Por preocupación por daños y pérdidas, además de la equidad y la seguridad, les pedimos a los estudiantes que no traigan juguetes desde casa. Si, esto incluye cartas de Pokémon. There are quite a few updates/unas actualizaciones: 

The LPTC has been busy planning: Portraits, Events, Fundraising... please plan to attend Movie Night on April 21st, and the End of Year Carnival on June 2nd! Both events need volunteers, so get in touch with an LPTC member. 

Please don't wait until the last minute to apply for Interdistrict Transfers from your district of residence -- Time is almost up! As well, please make sure if you order a breakfast to get your students to school on time. We order and prepare the meals, but can't serve them when they don't have time to eat. Please arrive before 8:15 at the latest if you ordered breakfast!

We have made some facility changes you may have noticed: The Preschool building is almost gone, and we are moving our lunch area to the former swing set area, which was past its 'expiration date' for safety.  

Spring Break approaches, with Friday off for Cesar Chavez Day. Stay safe and enjoy time away. The portrait sessions during Spring Break have been opened up to all students, not just graduates, so follow the link here to sign up https://www.dimarcoportraits.com/school. The fee for these sessions is being donated directly to the LPTC to support Lagunita!

Finally, a memorial for a neighbor: a La Joya student and their mother will be held on Monday the 3rd, flyer above.

El LPTC ha estado ocupado planeando: Retratos, Eventos, Recaudación de Fondos... planee asistir a la Noche de Cine el 21 de abril y al Carnaval de Fin de Año el 2 de junio. Ambos eventos necesitan voluntarios, así que comuníquese con un miembro del LPTC. 

No espere hasta el último minuto para solicitar transferencias entre distritos desde su distrito de residencia. ¡Se acaba el tiempo! Last night Lagunita's School Board adopted a calendar for the 23/24 school year. It is just below this message. Our first day of school will be August 16th, and our last day will be June 7th. Have a look and plan accordingly. We also rescheduled our March meeting, which will take place on the 21st rather than the 28th, and be followed by another early meeting: April 11th rather than the 25th. Finally, you should have received order forms for the LPTC's Spring candy fundraiser. Please support the Parent/Teacher Club's efforts to raise money for Lagunita. Thanks!

I had a week away last week and want to thank Ms. Gruber as well as the whole Lagunita staff for running a tight ship in my absence. My first case of COVID ever was one single night of disrupted sleep and zero spread at home. I look forward to returning. But as we start March this week: there's a Board Meeting on Tuesday night, a new cafeteria menu is posted on the website, and some of you will see another reminder letter about attendance rules and expectations. Please read, sign, and return the letter if you receive one. Attendance affects student learning, school financing, and staff workload. Thank for getting your students to school promptly and every day that they are healthy.

Tuve una semana extraña la semana pasada, y quiero agradecer a la Sra. Gruber, así como a todo el personal de Lagunita, por manejar un barco perfecto en mi ausencia. Mi primer caso de COVID fue una sola noche de sueño interrumpido y cero propagación en casa. Listo estoy para regresar. Comenzamos Marzo de esta semana: hay una junta de la Mesa el martes por la noche, se publica un nuevo menú de la cafetería en el sitio web, y algunos de ustedes verán otra carta de recordatorio sobre las reglas y expectativas de asistencia. Lea, firme y devuelva la carta si recibe una. La asistencia afecta el aprendizaje de los estudiantes, el financiamiento escolar y la carga de trabajo del personal. Gracias por llevar a sus estudiantes a la escuela puntualmente y todos los días que están saludables.

A quick reminder for parents and grandparents: recently many of you are bringing takeout food to your students at lunch time. Our procedure has, for many years, been for a parent to put the lunch bag in the crate on the porch just inside the door. We are requesting that you please write your student's name on the bag, to avoid confusion, and also to leave the lunch on the porch rather than bring it directly to your student, as this can be disruptive to other students eating. Your kids are excited to get a bag of hot fast food, but other students quickly become less satisfied with their own lunches. Thanks for your understanding. 

In addition, I want to thank the LPTC and all our parents who enjoyed the Paint Night! And one more item: we'll give COVID tests on the 21st. 

Un recordatorio rápido para padres y abuelos: recientemente, muchos de ustedes están trayendo comida rápida a sus estudiantes a la hora del almuerzo. Nuestro procedimiento, durante muchos años, ha sido que un padre deja la bolsa del almuerzo en la caja en el porche, justo dentro del oficina. We're halfway through the school year already--and we're excited to welcome 3/4 teacher and new dad Mr. Meza as he returns from parental leave! We're also excited to welcome a dance teacher, Ms. Natasha, each week on Thursdays. She'll be here for 8 weeks, with support from the LPTC and California voters' funding for more Art & Music education. Please get those "intent to return" forms back to the office, and please also let us know if your housing status has changed: a move, a new address, even temporarily staying with friends or family, its important for Lagunita to keep track of your address and importantly also to be able to provide appropriate resources and support if your housing situation has changed. Finally, the School Board meets Tuesday evening & the LPTC meets Friday after school

Ya estamos a la mitad del año escolar, ¡y estamos emocionados de dar la bienvenida a 3/4 del maestro y nuevo padre, el Sr. Meza, cuando regresa de su licencia por paternidad! También estamos emocionados de dar la bienvenida a una maestra de baile, la Sra. Natasha, los jueves de cada semana. Estará aquí durante 8 semanas, con el apoyo del LPTC y los fondos de los votantes de California para obtener más educación en Arte y Música. It's 2023 and already time to start plans for next year. Each student attending on an Interdistrict Transfer must annually request a new transfer. Talk with your district of residence about their process and timeline for the 23/24 school year. Today an Intent to Return form went home with each student, and is also below. We need them filled out and returned this month -- by February 3rd please. In addition, see the LPTC Paint Night Flyer that went home last week -- and RSVP by Feb 1st! The event is February 10th.

With rainfall coming and road closures projected we will be closed Friday, January 13th. Santa Rita's schools and kitchen and the high schools are already closed down. Below are some resources if you need assistance during this storm.

Have a wonderful winter break and holiday vacation, everyone! 

When we return on January 4th, 2023, we won't be able to serve food Wed-Fri Jan. 4, 5, & 6, as Santa Rita is still on vacation. The order form will be open during the break for meal service for the week of Jan 9-13. On the cafeteria topic, we will also return to our previous morning schedule, with drop off and breakfast service beginning at 8:00. Only a few families were taking advantage of the earlier service. Again: starting in 2023 all students can again arrive starting at 8:00.

¡Que todos tengan unas maravillosas vacaciones de invierno y vacaciones!

Cuando regresemos el 4 de enero de 2023, no podremos servir comida de miércoles a viernes 4, 5 y 6 de enero, ya que Santa Rita todavía está de vacaciones. El formulario de pedido estará abierto durante el descanso para el servicio de comidas para la semana del 9 al 13 de enero. A couple quick announcements: today's testing went smoothly, and no news is good news. Tomorrow is the 2nd VNA clinic after school for immunizations, and we're collecting donations for the Food Bank of Monterey County between the holidays. Barrels will be on the porch! And thank you for your continued patience with the parking lot. The project should be completed by the end of the week. Thanks!

Un par de anuncios rápidos: las pruebas de hoy pasaron sin problemas--y ninguna noticia es una buena noticia. Mañana es la segunda clínica VNA después de la escuela para inmunizaciones, y estaremos recolectando donaciones para el Banco de Alimentos del Condado de Monterey entre los dias festivos. Los barriles estarán enfrente de la oficina! Y gracias por su continua paciencia con el estacionamiento. El proyecto debe de ser terminado antes del fin de la semana. Gracias!

We have been so fortunate -- and vigilant -- regarding COVID this year. At-home tests are available on campus whenever you need them; and we will next test students on 11/28 after returning from the long Thanksgiving break. Stay safe and enjoy time with family! And don't forget to return all fall raffle tickets by Friday!

A couple notes about the meal service: 

• You can order meals any time. You do not need to wait until Friday, but your order is for one week only, and it cuts off at 1pm each Friday for the following week.

• Breakfast and Lunch are separate orders but they are on the same form.

• We ask that everyone fill out the Free/Reduced Lunch form for documentation; but meals are available to everyone regardless of income.

• You will now receive an emailed confirmation of your order.

• The meals are nut free.

Un par de notas sobre el servicio de comidas:

• Puedes pedir comidas en cualquier momento. No es necesario esperar hasta el viernes, pero su pedido es solo para una semana y se corta a la 1:00 p. m. todos los viernes para la semana siguiente.

Saturday is the Trunk or Treat! We're fast approaching Halloween on Monday, and we want everyone to celebrate safely.  Students are welcome to wear costumes on Monday, but we have the usual expectations so that we can still hold classes:

• "School-appropriate" means you shouldn't be scary to Kinders, and you have to fit in your desk!

• "School-appropriate" also means your costume shouldn't make anyone uncomfortable or upset. If you're not sure, please ask us before Monday.

• Don't bring any costume weapons or bulky accessories

• Bring--but don't wear--your costume mask. You can put it on for photos or classroom activities, but we need to see your face.

Tomorrow is the last day for 6th & 8th graders to turn in paperwork for the Nov. 8th Student Council election. A quick reminder about parking lot safety -- if you need to get out of your car, please park in a spot. First, as we need all students to use the crosswalk, we need all adults to do the same. Secondly, we can't have cars left unattended on the center divide. It interferes with the flow of traffic.

Now, Tuesday is a long way away, but food orders for the whole week must be placed by 1:00 tomorrow. And please talk with your students about the orders you place, so they know what to expect. We can't serve them food if they didn't place an order.  

Again: starting next week, we'll serve Breakfast from 7:50-8:15. If your student orders breakfast they can be dropped off 10 minutes early. Unless they ordered food and are eating breakfast, other students must wait until 8:00. We will stop serving food at 8:15.

An important announcement: Lagunita will begin offering free Breakfast and Lunch starting on October 11th. We will send home a packet with a calendar of meals, an income form, and flyers from the above events. Breakfast and Lunch will be free to all students regardless of income, but we will ask you to fill out the form anyway for Santa Rita's records as they will prepare the meals. We will ask you to order meals in advance for the following week with an online form.

I have a few more "logistical" type reminders for tomorrow: We won't delay families who need to keep their schedules, and we'll need your help and cooperation to do so! This is a student event during the school day. Parents and guardians who want to watch and cheer will need to return to their cars at a certain point to prepare for a regular 1:50 dismissal. And again--you might want to bring a beach towel as kids just might head to your car chalk-covered and wet.

The run is at the end of the school day, so please be patient with us while we manage a safe cooperative & timely dismissal.

I'd like to encourage parents to attend Friday's LPTC meeting on campus after school, and also next week's School Board meeting Tuesday night at 6. These are excellent ways to plug in, get involved, participate, and support Lagunita! 

An important note for Friday, though: the meeting will start at 3:00, but we need to safely dismiss all students. Please: if you are attending the LPTC meeting, park and wait at your car. We will send your students to you in the parking lot. After the lot has cleared, then please cross back to the tables with your student. This will help us get students and cars safely home, and allow the meeting to start on time without unnecessary confusion. Thanks!

What a day! Day 1 is in the books, and just 179 more school days in the 22-23 school year. We're excited to welcome new Kindergarteners, a few new students, and two new staff members. 

Reminders: We'll perform COVID tests on Monday morning. Please send a signed permission form--below--if you would like your student to be tested at no cost. Next Friday there's an LPTC meeting after school--3:00 on campus. The first LPTC event will be a family movie night on Friday the 26th on our field. 

Thank you for your patience and support as we navigate some changes, especially with regard to the food safety concerns around nut allergies. Remember: no peanuts nor tree nuts of any kind, as all nuts are a health risk to a member of our school community. As someone who is used to snacking on trail mix and bars, I am aware this creates a challenge for the lunchbox. Today I saw salami, quesadillas, nut-free bars--nature's path fig bars are produced in a nut-free processing facility, for one example--graham crackers, goldfish, raisins, pretzels... all nut free snacks.

I have a really important announcement that needs to go to all families, all parents, and all caregivers regarding food on campus, snacks and lunches, for all students: It is important that no student bring nuts onto campus. From day 1, no tree nuts of any kind. No nuts in lunchboxes, no pb&j, no nut butter, no almonds or cashews, no peanut candies, no nuts. Thanks for your cooperation, and for your vigilance as this could cause a serious health issue for a Lagunita student.

On 6/28, Lagunita's Board unanimously approved a gradespan change that will discontinue grades 7 and 8 after next year, with Lagunita becoming a K-6 at the beginning of the 23/24 school year. El 28 de junio, la Junta de Lagunita aprobó por unanimidad un cambio de rango de grados que suspenderá los grados 7 y 8 después del próximo año, y Lagunita se convertirá en K-6 al comienzo del año escolar 23/24.

What a year, truly. It feels more like an accomplishment, getting across the finish line this time. And I'm sure the graduates feel the same way: they've been through a lot and have worked to overcome quite a few obstacles to arrive at 8th grade graduation. 

Next year will bring some changes with the departure of two teachers. We wish Ms. Hampson a happy retirement, and we wish Mrs. Young all the best.  

Have a wonderful summer one and all; and in closing I offer sincere congratulations to our graduates, the class of 2022.

Well it's the last week of school. The 21/22 year has been an interesting one and we're grateful for your patience, contributions, and enthusiastic support of the amazing team of educators at Lagunita. Friday was our last day with Coach Rance, and the LPTC's end of year picnic was a big event! Thank you for coming.

Wednesday's dismissal is at 12:45, with graduation for 8th graders and their families at 2:00. Congratulations class of 2022!

As we approach the end of the school year, I hope you will celebrate a safe and healthy Memorial Day weekend in recognition of lives lost in military actions. When we return it'll be quickly June, and we'll be celebrating the end of the school year with an end of year picnic thanks to the LPTC, and activities on June 6, 7, & 8 recognizing Ms. Hampson's retirement and all the many accomplishments of students and staff alike in the 21/22 school year. 

A couple of other reminders: Please stay vigilant and let's get across the finish line healthy! We'll test students for COVID one more time on the 2nd, but we've been impacted heavily over the past two weeks by resurgent COVID cases. Please keep an eye out for symptoms, please use your at-home test kits and request more from https://special.usps.com/testkits, and please help us all finish this year healthy. We don't want anyone to miss out on end of the year celebrations!

8th grade parents, you should be hearing from Mrs. Nakamura today as well regarding Graduation. Congratulations to our 8th graders--the Class of 2022!

Lagunita community:

I am disgusted by the murders of school children and educators earlier today in Texas. I don't have all the answers to offer your children tomorrow, but I know we'll talk about it, like we talked about the shooting in Buffalo last week--and countless massacres before. 

There are a few things I must ask you tonight: 

*First is to understand that a quickness to anger and easy access to guns are a dangerous combination. Please talk to your children about appropriate things to do and say when they are angry--and please be intentional about safeguarding firearms. Follow the law and secure guns properly. This is all of our responsibility. 

*Secondly, I ask that you discuss safety at Lagunita with your student and the rest of your family. Talk about our safety plans, what kind of things need to be reported to an adult on campus, and what to do about worrisome behavior, casual threats of violence, or the presence of a weapon on campus. Don't pretend that it couldn't happen here. 

*Also, if your kid has an internet connected device, you should be monitoring it. I ask you to use the parental controls on cell phones and gaming devices for your kids. Shooters have often planned (and shared their plans) online. Reviewing search histories has stopped school shootings. 

*Escalating rhetoric attacking teachers is also a serious issue for school safety. When media commentators--or parents--undermine respect for educational institutions, or when anger at school policies is directed at teachers, schools become less safe.   

I ask you to discuss these things because school teachers should not be the primary people leading these discussions. We do so because we are thrust into the position of responding to children in an appropriate way, and because of course we want to stop these outrages. But we cannot do it alone. All of us, everyone in the community, needs to make it clear to our kids that their safety is our shared top priority, and shootings like today's are intolerable.

I want to encourage everyone to support the LPTC with our Spring Fundraiser this month! The goal is for each student to sell at least 10 boxes, and the last day to turn in orders is coming soon: Thursday March 24th!

During the next few weeks there are lots of forums for your input: Next Wednesday (March 16) there's an important School Site Council meeting. Our next Board meeting will be March 22nd. Please take advantage of these important opportunities! We have a regular schedule all the way through the month until Spring Break, April 4-8.

Please read the above communications regarding the statewide school masking policy change. Lagunita will continue to require masks whenever indoors through Friday March 11th, as mandated. Beginning March 14th, masks will be optional on campus. I must encourage families to continue to use masks in order to minimize risk as this policy change takes effect, and further ask that parents please support the school staff in directing students to take appropriate steps to safeguard their health and safety--including masking as needed.

All students K-8 will be dismissed at 12:45. The trimester ends March 4th, a regular Friday, and there is no school on Monday March 7th.

Finally, next year's calendar was adopted by the Board and is on the website, and there's one more week to bring food bank donations to fill the barrels! Thank you. We're looking forward to a safe return to school on Monday -- for students & staff, families and the whole Lagunita community. With this in mind, a couple of important reminders: 

*Please send your student with a high quality face mask. Cloth masks start to degrade after multiple washes, and kids grow. My son has grown an inch since the start of school and needs new face masks again, as a good fit is extremely important. I've seen a few "decorative" masks made of mesh. These will not work--masks of all types must fit well, stay on, and be functional and effective. Thanks for your support!

*You should test your students again on Sunday. The purpose of the at-home tests we distributed is to catch any exposure or infection before it comes to school with the new year; and to reassure you, the parent!

*We'll still perform tests for all students who've opted in on Monday morning--and again on Thursday if necessary due to positive test results.

Feliz año nuevo! Esperamos un regreso seguro a la escuela el lunes, para los estudiantes y el personal, las familias y toda la comunidad de Lagunita. Con esto en mente, unos recordatorios importantes:

* Por favor envíe a su estudiante con una mascarilla de alta calidad. Las mascarillas de tela comienzan a degradarse después de varios lavados, y los niños crecen. Mi hijo ha crecido una pulgada desde el comienzo del ano escolar, y necesita nuevas mascarillas. Un buen ajuste es extremadamente importante. He visto algunas máscaras "decorativas" hechas de malla. Estas no funcionarán; las máscaras de todo tipo deben quedar bien, permanecer, y ser funcionales y efectivas. ¡Gracias por su apoyo!

*Debe volver a dar pruebas a sus estudiantes el domingo. El propósito de las pruebas en el hogar que distribuimos es detectar cualquier exposición o infección antes de que llegue el año nuevo a la escuela y para tranquilizarlos a ustedes en casa.

* Seguiremos realizando pruebas para todos los estudiantes que hayan optado por participar el lunes por la mañana, y nuevamente el jueves si es necesario debido a los resultados positivos de las pruebas.

At-home COVID test drive-through pickup for all students: Tues Jan 4 or Wed Jan 5 from 9:30-11am 

Recojida de en-casa pruebas de COVID del estilo Drive-Thru por cada estudiante: martes 4 o miercoles 5 de enero de 9:30-11am.  

In advance of next week's return to school, Lagunita has instant tests available to all families. January 4th or 5th you can pick up one box (two tests) per student between 9:30 & 11am and perform these tests yourself regardless of whether you've participated in our testing program at school. 

These tests are provided to assist with a confident and safe(r) return to campus. We ask that you perform one test on Thursday the 6th and another on Sunday the 9th. Lagunita will test all students who have opted in on the 10th and again on the 13th. We want to be thorough in screening students and staff during this unprecedented surge so that we can continue to offer in person classes. Thanks!

Antes del regreso a la escuela de la próxima semana, Lagunita tiene pruebas de COVID-19 instantáneos disponibles para todas las familias. Thank you to the LPTC for a wonderful holiday reward: All those raffle tickets sales earned our students a sweet send off, donuts, hot chocolate, and apple cider on their last day of the calendar year! Thanks, Lagunita parents, and thanks LPTC, also, for the holiday ornaments provided to each Lagunita classroom!

Please remember that Friday Dec. 17th is the first day of Winter Break, and that we don't return until January 10th, 2022.

On Monday the 10th we will screen students for COVID-19. Over vacation, please focus on safe masking, hand washing, and safety. As vaccines are now approved for students as young as five, I can only encourage you to consider vaccinating your kids--and yourselves--so that we can stay open throughout 2022. And please share the vaccination records with us, especially after the second shot. Thank you.

Statement from Monterey County Superintendent of Schools Dr. Deneen Guss on COVID-19 Vaccine Approval for 5-11 Year Olds

As families here in Monterey County have eagerly awaited the approval of 5 to 11 year old vaccinations for COVID-19, we here at the Monterey County Office of Education have been working closely with the Monterey County Health Department to prepare local schools for the rollout of youth vaccinations.

Vaccine clinics for children aged 5 to 11 have already begun. Parent and guardians will have ample opportunities to get their children vaccines through these primary avenues:

• Primary Care Providers: Pediatricians and Health Care Providers.

• Community Clinics: City-based clinics and county-based clinics operated by the Monterey County Health Department.

• School Based Clinics: The Monterey County Office of Education has partnered with 8 local school districts and 2 charter schools in coordinating school-based vaccine clinics. Please contact your local school district’s administrators to find out more about school-based clinics.
