The USAID Monitoring, Learning, and Evaluation (MEL) team presented the methodology to create and use logic models for programmatic development. Logic models visually present and represent relationships between resources, actors, and objects and must be included in USAID Project Appraisal Documents (PADs). Various logic model examples were showcased and discussed as they relate to development hypotheses.

Foreign Affairs Counter Threat (FACT) Training, USG Training Facility/USA, 2017
Training program is a general security awareness program designed to prepare personnel and adult family members from all backgrounds to live and work overseas while serving under the Department of State (DOS) Chief of Mission authority. The program is a student-centered approach to security awareness and situational response training which includes classroom sessions and practical applications culminating in final exercise scenarios. Course included: surviving hostage situations, improvised explosive devices (IEDs), advanced vehicle handling skills, tactical medical, defensive tactics, protective countermeasures, surveillance detection, and counter threat tactics.
Personnel Recovery Employee Education, Management, and Prevention (PREEMPT), USAID, 2016
Four-day training to prepare, train, and equip USAID employees and management to respond to the threats associated with isolation. Additionally, to provide the necessary assistance to isolated personnel upon return to ensure successful reintegration back to society. Trainings focus on: personnel recovery overview, proper use of communications and tracking equipment, and conduct after an isolating incident.
Programming Foreign Assistance, USAID, 2016
In this five-day course developed in collaboration with the U.S. State Department, participants learn rules, policies, and specific procedures that govern programming of foreign assistance, from strategic planning, activity and pre-obligation planning, and full and open competition to performance management and evaluation. PFA focuses on U.S. foreign assistance in the inter-agency context to familiarize USAID and other USG staff with the requirements and tools that support results-based management of our nation's foreign aid program.

Science Outside the Lab, presented by Arizona State University’s Consortium for Science, Policy and Outcomes (CSPO), explored the relationships among science, policy, and societal outcomes in a place where many important decisions about these things are made – Washington, D.C. Learned how to communicate persuasively with government officials to provide advice, guidance, and technical assistance with scientific research. During the two-week workshop, we met with representatives from the State Department, Congress, NASA, US Army, EPA, private industry, and various university and professional society leaders.
