Wave Pattern Crochet Hat

This is an easy pattern for crocheters, using the height of different stitches to create a graduated wave pattern.

Please note, the instructions given are using UK terms.

Materials:

100 g of Double Knitting (Worsted) weight yarn, main colour, and approx 40g or the contrast colour.

4mm (US size 6, or G) crochet hook.

Abbreviations:

ch – chain

dc – double crochet (US, single crochet)

htr – Half treble (US, half double)

tr – Treble (US, treble)

ss – Slip stitch.

To make the hat:

Make 6 ch and join into a loop using a slip stitch.

Unless specified, work 1 st into each stitch of the round below (eg work 4tr means work 1tr into each of the next 4 sts). All rounds are joined using a slip stitch.

Round 1: Work 12 dc into the loop.

Round 2: 3ch (for first tr), work 1tr into the first dc. Work 2 tr into each dc, and join.

Round 3: 3ch (for first tr), miss the first st. *Work 1 tr, then 2 tr into the next st. Rep from * to the end of the round and join. (36sts)

Round 4: 3ch (for first tr), miss the first st, work 2 tr into the next st, work 1 tr, *work 1 tr, then 2tr into the next st, then 1 tr; rep from * to the end of the round and join. (48 sts)

Rounds 5, 8, 11, 13: 1ch, work 1dc into each st, and join.

Round 6: 3ch (for first tr), miss the first st, work 2 tr into the next st, work 2 tr , *work 1 tr, then 2tr into the next st, then work 2 tr; rep from * to the end of the round and join. (60 sts)

Round 7: 3ch (for first tr), miss the first st, work 1 tr,work 2 tr into the next st, work 2 tr. *work 2 tr, then 2tr into the next st, then 2 tr; rep from * to the end of the round and join. (72 sts)

Round 9 3ch (for first tr), miss the first st, work 3 tr, work 2 tr into the next st, and then work 4 tr, *work 4 tr, then 2tr into the next st, then 4 tr; rep from * to the end of the round and join. (80 sts)

Round 10 3ch (for first tr), miss the first st, work 3 tr , work 2 tr into the next st, and then work 5 tr, *work 4 tr , then 2tr into the next st, then 5 tr ; rep from * to the end of the round and join. (80 sts)

Round 12 3ch (for first tr), miss the first st, work 1tr into every st. Join.

Rounds 14, 19, 20, 25, 26 1ch, work 14dc, 16 htr, 28 tr, 16 htr, 14 dc, join to the initial ch with a ss.

Rounds 15,18, 21, 24, 27 As round 5, but worked in the contrast colour.

Rounds 16, 17, 22, 23, 28 3ch (for first tr) then work 13tr, 16 htr, 28dc, 16htr, 14 tr, join to the top of the initial 3 ch with a ss.

Round 29, as row 5, but after joining the yarn, turn, so that you’re now working the other way.

Round 30, 1ch,*work 3dc, then work 2dc into the next st; rep from * to end (110 sts)

Rounds 31-34, 1ch, *work 2dc, 2htr, 3tr, 2htr, 2dc, rep from * to end.

Final round (in contrast colour). As round 15.

Fasten off yarn and weave in all ends.

This pattern would also make a great stash buster, working each of the “waves” in a different colour.
