Online Listening & Viewing Opportunities
Below are a number of my favorite websites for students who want to listen to interesting things, watch videos and improve their listening skills. Some of these sites feature speech at a somewhat slower speed. Many sites use easier language and/or provide text along with sound. Try listening with and without text.
Randall's ESL Cyber Listening Lab
Many listening quizzes and activities. Exercises are at Easy, Medium, or Difficult language levels, so there is something for everyone.
ELLLO (English Language Listening Lab Online) has over 1,000 free listening activities designed for ESL/EFL students. Most listening activities include pictures, an interactive quiz, the ability to show or hide words along with the sound and a downloadable MP3. Most of the conversations are natural speed, so you can try listening with the words if you can't follow the first time.
Do you like watching YouTube? Enjoy interesting YouTube videos and learn English at the same time. Listen, read, take quizzes, listen and repeat, practice conversations, and more.
Read and listen to current news stories on a wide range of interesting topics. Easy-to-understand articles limited to basic 2,500 word vocabulary (dictionary available). Downloadable/streaming audio is a bit slower than normal, for easy listening. Some newscasts are also available by video with captions and very slow speech. Site includes links to talking dictionaries, word games and reading exercises. If you enjoy fiction, be sure to check out the American Stories section!
You can also subscribe to their free daily podcasts. Just go to their podcasts page and download or subscribe on iTunes.
This excellent site allows you to select music videos and read the lyrics as you listen, filling in the blanks as you go. If you miss a word, you get another chance and/or can move back yourself to try again. You can also set the level of difficulty. You don't need an account, but creating one unlocks some features and allows you to keep track of your work.

BBC World Service - Learning English
Great site for upper elementary and above! Read and listen to news, human/cultural interest stories, business news, interviews, reviews and dialogs. Most stories include pictures, streaming audio or video and glossaries. Some include comprehension quizzes and audio scripts. Also try grammar & vocabulary exercises, interactive quizzes & games, and discussion boards. Many sections have extensive archives. Explore!
Check their podcasts (genre = learning) for several on English learning.
A fascinating site featuring many interesting short films and English games. Each comes with optional subtitles (字幕) and quizzes. The language is challenging, but the subtitles help, and it's a great way to include some variety in your study. Free and paid video courses are also available.
