Since delivering a Basic Life Support training session in Gosforth, the Friday before last, I have received this account of how they put the training into practice. This account clearly demonstrating the application of the chain of survival.
"Last Wednesday a GP & Receptionist were leaving work at lunch time - about 500 yards from Practice - a gentleman collapsed on the path behind them.
Dr Dan started CPR - Lou ran back to surgery for DEFIB & raise alarm - I ran with the Oxygen Sister Karen & GP Jane.
We were all in attendance within 3 minutes.
Dan gave CPR & Karen Breaths & Jane sorted DEFIB & Oxygen - we shocked him twice - Paramedics arrived - I must say they let Dan continue for a while!!! - & they then took over - from then it took 45-50 minutes & a lot more defib shocking to get him into a position where they could put him into the Ambulance & then to Hospital - I did the fetching & carrying - everyone needs a fetcher & carrier especially for false teeth.
He was actually one of our patients he is doing well & amazingly they think he will be home end of this week!!!!
We have been contacted by Paramedics to congratulate us on the wonderful immediate treatment we gave and that the patient would not have survived without this.
Everyone would like to thank you for your excellent training".
