Lawrence W. Fellows, member of Flotilla 73, passed away suddenly on Sunday, 13DEC09 at home in Portland. The tradition in the US Coast Guard is to say that members who have passed have "Crossed over the Bar." Larry was to celebrate his 8th service anniversary as an Auxiliarist on 31DEC of this year. Larry was also a veteren of the US Army and US Navy Reserve. He was 72 years old and is survived by his wife, Alice. A Funeral service commemorating Larry was held at the Mt. Scott Funeral Home on Saturday, 19DEC and was very well attended by shipmates from Flotilla 73, Division 07 and Sector Portland Commander Captain Myer, Vice Commander McClellan, and Command Center LT. Trevino.
Larry was an outstanding individual. He was involved in his communty through the Kenton Neighborhood Association where he held a number of positions through the years. His commitment to the enviornment was seen in his involvement with the Harbor Oil Cleanup program and his passion for things nautical were evidenced by his many years as a volunteer on the Steamer Portland tug. The Auxiliary benefited greatly from his skills and experience in all these endeavors. Larry held offices at the Flotilla and Division levels in Marine Safety, and was the first Auxiliarist in Sector Portland to earn the coveted Trident qualification. He then became a mentor for the Trident program and has coached a number of other Auxiliarists in their pursuit of the qualification. He was a daily fixture in the Aux office on base.
Larry's biggest contribution was his calmness, great smile and willing spirit to do anything he could for anyone who needed help. He was our shipmate, a fellow Guardian and our friend. We will miss him greatly.
Larry - May your skies be fair, wind be calm and seas be following.
