These changes lower some graphics and add new functions that overall increase graphics and FPS, funny thing is that these tweaks increase fps and graphic quality
Original S1Engine File Screenshot ~ Edited S1Engine File Screenshot
These screenshots were taken from a clean install of the game editing only the s1engine file, note that I cap my FPS at 60 so it often shows 59 fps instead
Objects and Terms
Bernkastel's Tweaks
Starting with Bernkastel's Guide. I will be explaining multiple tweaks mentioned in both and my opinions on them. Make sure to have it open!
Party UI Buff Tweak
This tweak is good for everyone who doesn't do Champion's Skyring 3v3, because you will not be able to see what buffs and debuffs your party members have, which is essential for this game mode but, every other part of the game does not require you to see if your party members have buffs making it very good for those who don't do 3v3
Boss HP Bar Tweak
This is a good fix but I would download the file from the original author if he decides to rerelease it after he's fixed it here
If you don't like the Boss HP Bar at all you can use this link to remove it and increase FPS even more here
Fullscreen
Fullscreen is a real bother, it makes it take longer to tab in and out so I don't like it, but it is viable for a small performance increase
S1Engine Tweaks
These are better explained in Tech's Guide, although DynamicDecals and DynamicLights are not mentioned in Techy's Guide since they have such a negative visual impact
Both are useful, if you don't care about who has aggro and don't need to see attack indicators on the floor you can turn DynamicDecals off, If you don't mind the game looking like it is night time you can turn off DynamicLights
Field of View
Allows you to zoom out farther so yuo can see more, also the default zoom of Tera gives some people headaches which zooming out solves. The default zoom is 72 and the the most common zoom to change to is 90
Disable Mouse Smoothing
This should be changed by everyone, you can't aim well with it and it uses your CPU's resources
Reduce UI Lag
I don't know how much of a difference it causes performance wise but it's purely optional and can noticeable cause quality of life loss
Disabling Intro Videos
It's great to log in faster and prevent memory leaks, everyone should do this
Disable Hyperthreading/Overclocking
Both are good for increasing performance but can be dangerous if done incorrectly, you should only do these if you are confident in your abilities
Vpn/TCP Tweaks
I live in america and have a good connection to the Tera Servers so I don't gain anything from these, if you live far away or have poor pathing to the Tera Servers these may help
Techy's Guide
These are slightly more advanced tweaks but are still not that difficult. Make sure to have Techy's Guide open when reading this!
1 - General
Basically says update all your non motherboard drivers and you can install a fresh version of windows and choose what updates you get as well as to set windows update to not automatic(windows 10 can't disable auto update)
If you're on an old laptop/library computer you shouldn't expect great power or speed since it's just like expecting a scooter or walking go make you go 100 miles per hour
2 - Port Forwarding
Mostly for if your internet is poorly routed but I would do this fix regardless since it can only help
Also notes that lag=network(high ping/poor connection) and low FPS=stuttering/etc
3 - Ktera Tweaks
At the bottom of this post he says that this post was only for stating his opinion of the tweaks made by another person and that they are amateurish and dangerous and shouldn't be done, #4 is the post that you should use to change your S1Engine file, should only read this post if you are further interested in S1Engine tweaks
4 - S1Engine
This is the bulk of great things that you should do to greatly increase your FPS
You can download his S1Engine file and edit all the lines that say SPECIFIC and the screenshot directory pathing or do the same to My current S1Engine File with 60 FPS Cap or My Uncapped FPS S1Engine File, he has a 1GB of GDDR5 memory Nvidia GPU + 8GB RAM + CPU Bottleneck and I have Nvidia 2GB memory GPU + 8GB RAM + Cpu Bottleneck
So what is the point of capping your FPS? There is no point of having your FPS go over your Monitor's Refresh Rate since it will just lead to extra stress on your computer, to limit your FPS go into your S1Engine file and press Ctrl + F and type frame rate, you will find
bSmoothFrameRate=TRUE
MinSmoothedFrameRate=20
MaxSmoothedFrameRate=60
True enables FPS Smoothing, which lowers your FPS and caps it so that it can try to prevent CPU Stuttering and steady FPS, set the min to any number and set the max to your monitors refresh rate or whatever you feel like Capping your FPS at
If your fps doesn't go over your Monitor's Refresh Rate then don't use bSmoothFrameRate, leave it set it false unless you experience stuttering or crashing
Not everyone's s1engine files are the same, if you experience problems(like stuttering) and have done bSmoothFrameRate=TRUE/FALSE, delete your S1Egine file, open Tera, close Tera, and open your freshly created S1Engine file to edit each line using techy's guide
The laptop version from Pt2 of #4 is also very viable and the audio from Pt3 or #4 is just if you like certain sounds that Techy and I have disabled you can reenable them by pasting these lines into your S1Engine file
Unreal Engine
These are very easy small tweaks that you should do, they add lines to your Tera Shortcut.exe and Nvidia Control Panel Tweaks for editing different settings
6 - CPU Core Unparking
Most computers don't need to unpark their cores since they are usually unparked already, it doesn't hurt to do this tweak if you're not sure if your cores are unparked or not
7 - Tera Specific Tweaks
Talks about easy In-Game tweaks and tweaks mentioned elsewhere from him
8 - Remove Intro Videos
Bernkastel mentioned these tweaks from Techy's guide, they are great quality of life boosts with performance gain and definitely worth doing
9 - UI Modding
The Party UI Buff Tweak that Bernkastel mentioned and other tweaks
10 - FoV and Font
The Field of View fix mentioned in Bernkastel's Guides and font tweaks, the font tweaks are only graphical changes, whether they are positive or negative changes is purely opinion
11 - Tera Chat Font
Font tweaks continued and further elaborated on
12 - ExampleGame.INT
More optional font things
13 - Lorri's Korean Guide & Theorycrafting Translations
I haven't looked at this but it is all just optional information that is for the interested
Other Notes
If you go here and look up with First Person no UI on you get super high FPS, make sure to stand in the same spot and look in the same direction before and after you change your settings if you want to get an accurate fps difference measurement you may not increase by the same amount in all areas, but your fps should be noticeably better
The more items that you have in you inventory, the more likely you are to experience cpu stuttering, cleaning your is an inventory easy way to make the game more stable
Increases the graphics of the game at the cost of extra GPU usage and possible FPS loss
Anti-Aliasing
I will be refering to this guide as we go through this section, make sure to have it open!
Post process injection (Beginner)
I don't like this because SweetFx can make you unable to connect to the game and adds tons of files to your tera installation, so I would not do this
MSAA/SGSSAA/SSAA (Experienced)(Nvidia Only)
This is a safe and really easy change that increases graphics by a lot and does use a huge amount of GPU resources
You simply use Nvidia Inspector to edit a couple lines to the same lines as in the pictures
Make sure to use Antialiasing compatibility = 0x000100C5 (MSAA) under compatibility heading: instead of 0x000010C1 (SGSSAA) because it gives better FPS and uses less resources
Downsampling(Nvidia Only Version)
I will be refering to this video throughout the guide
Downsampling is making your CPU load a higher resolution than your screen so that there more pixels per inch increasing graphics
You right click on your desktop to open the Nvidia Control Panel, you can use monitoring software like MSI Afterburner to check your GPU Temperature and Usage to see the difference that Downsampling creates
On the left under Display, go to Adjust desktop size and position, make sure you have the right screen selected and change your settings to Scaling Mode - Aspect Ratio + Perform scaling on - GPU Override the scaling mode by games and programs and click apply in the bottom right
Next go under 3D Settings - Manage 3D settings and under Global settings and in DSR - Factors check each box in the drop down then click ok, DSR - Smoothness will by default be 33% and controls smoothness compared to sharpness of downscaled images, afterwards make sure to click apply in the bottom right
Then under Display - Change resolution, select a Dynamic Super Resolution, any size is fine but you should start with the largest one x4 and see how much of your GPU it uses and if you can allocate that much to Downsampling, then click apply in the bottom right
You will be asked if you want to save your changes or not and may lose control of your mouse because of it, just Alt + Tab twice to be able to select yes
If you have Tera open you need to close the game and restart it to see the changes, if you do not notice changes go into the options menu in game and under Video check to see if your resolution is at the amount that you set it at, if not you may need to manually select your resolution and possibly restart again
Downsampling will change your screens resolution so you may need to increase your mouse's Dots Per Inch(DPI) so that you can move the same amount on the screen with the same movement of the mouse as you did before
