7.4 Data Visualization Project Curriculum Page
Portfolio Reflection Questions:
- Which data set did you select and why did you choose it? Summarize the data included, being specific about the types of data (text, sounds, transactions, etc.) included. Make sure you list the title and the website where you found the data.
- The data set we selected and used for this project was regarding information with plane crashes and fatalities. The data includes the date of the crash, time, location, operator, flight #, route, type of plane, registration, # of passengers aboard flight, # of fatalities, and summary of the crash (text and numerical data). We retrieved this data from Open Data (https://opendata.socrata.com/).
- List your 3-5 hypotheses and the data visualizations that you created for each. (Include the visualizations as images on your portfolio or provide a link to them shared with your instructor.)
a. The number of crashes would spike during WWI.
b. The number of people aboard generally match the number of fatalities.
c. The number of fatalities would go up over the years due to increased commercialization of flights (more people on planes and more flights each day).
- Visualizations for each linked below.
3. Explain how collaborating with a partner helped you gain new insight or knowledge about the data.
- By collaborating with a partner, it helped me develop more insightful hypotheses because we were able to discuss the information included in the data and what we thought would be shown. In addition, we were able to discover what the graphs revealed about the information together.
4. Identify at least one security and/or privacy concern that is associated with the data in the data set you chose.
- Information regarding plane crashes for each airline is revealed and this information may be released without the consent of people that had friends/family die in these crashes. In addition, airlines may want to keep this information private but by having this data set it releases the information to the public.
