UV-199 Replacement for 1924 RCA AR-812 Superheterodyne Radio

After waiting almost 17 years to finally repair and partially restoring my RCA AR-812 Superheterodyne, the next step was to find a replacement for the six UV-199 vacuum tubes it used. Not too many sets used the small UV-199 tube so they are hard to get and expensive, I found a subminiature CK-5676 made by Raytheon and others that were common and operate similarly to the UV-199. This section shows how I made this tube a replacement.

1. The CK5676 is similar to the UV-199 except for the filament voltage. Remove the glass envelope from dud UV-199's. Soldered the CK5676 wired`leads into the correct pins of the UV-199.

2. Purchased some chemical dropper bottles. Removed the dropper. Will only need the bottle and cap. The hole in on the cap is large enough to slide through the CK5676 body.

3. Insert the cap through the vacuum tube and used quick setting epoxy to seat the cap into the UV-199 base.

4. Here is what the UV-199 substitute looks like before putting the bottle over it.

5.. Completed UV-199 substitute.

6. Set of FIVE UV-199 substitutes for the RCA Radiola AR-812 Superheterodyne.

7. UV-199 substitutes installed.
