Graduate programs at MSU Mankato require a capstone experience. The Technical Communication offers three options:
What's the difference? The nature of the project is the main distinction.
Get to know your classmates. That probably sounds odd since you may live hundreds or thousands of miles away from Mankato. But your odds of successfully completing the M.A. program go up substantially if you develop some friends in the program. You'll find yourself motivated to complete your work so that you can contribute to the conversations and offer advice when they have questions. You'll also have a sounding board for ideas for your own work. Use small group breakouts to get to know each other. Schedule your own chats, hangouts, or other meetings. Don't dread collaborative projects...they aren't going away.
Get to know your professors. This should be obvious, but it isn't. An online program means that the work is completed online. It doesn't mean that you should communicate only via email. You'll find that a phone call is often a lot faster and more constructive than an email exchange. Most of the faculty have Skype accounts for video calls. Together with your homegrown cohort, contact with the faculty will greatly increase the odds of your success in the program.
