Resumo: No século XIX, a pesquisa e os escritos espíritas conviveram com teses e descobertas científicas diversas, como o trem a vapor, a geração espontânea, a eletricidade e o magnetismo, a telegrafia, a mecânica dos fluidos, a introdução da teoria atômica na Química etc. Em particular, no campo da Medicina, uma teoria chamada Frenologia, que pretendia relacionar aspectos dimensionais do crânio com capacidade cognitiva, ganhou espaço e adeptos. Seu escopo: explicar faculdades intelectuais e tendências humanas a partir do desenvolvimento maior, ou menor, de determinadas áreas do cérebro, perceptíveis no aspecto exterior do crânio. Allan Kardec tratou do tema em textos diversos, cuja análise permite compreender as ideias do Codificador sobre humanidade e progresso. O presente artigo, resultado de pesquisa bibliográfica, visa reunir trechos que revelam o pensamento de Kardec sobre a Frenologia, publicados na Revista Espírita; descobrir se ele aderiu ou não aos seus postulados e, em especial, compreender suas ideias sobre inferioridade e superioridade espiritual, e sobre as então chamadas “raças”.

Abstract: In the 19th century, spiritist research and writings coexisted with diverse scientific theses and discoveries, such as the steam train, spontaneous generation, electricity and magnetism, telegraphy, fluid mechanics, the introduction of the atomic theory in chemistry etc. In particular, in the field of Medicine, a theory called Phrenology, which intended to relate dimensional aspects of the skull to cognitive ability, has gained space and followers. Its scope: to explain intellectual faculties and human tendencies from the greater or lesser development of certain areas of the brain, perceptible in the skull. Allan Kardec deal with the topic in several articles, whose analysis allows us to understand the Codifier's thoughts and ideas about humanity and progress. This article, the result of bibliographical research, aims to gather excerpts that reveal Kardec's thoughts on Phrenology, published in the Spiritist Magazine; find out whether or not he adhered to his postulates and, in particular, understand his ideas about spiritual inferiority and superiority, and about the so-called “races”.
