Transcendence and politics: a topic of enclosure ?

Summary : The notion of transcendence is now commonly associated in modern culture to a heteronomy that would put humans in a situation of dependence below a dominating power. It is thought as well as what closes social order on itself, prohibiting all calling into question. This link between transcendence and enclosure should be considered. From works of Regis Debray, Cornelius Castoriadis and Marcel Gauchet, it can draw ways to renew the theological-political’s understanding.

Transcendence and calling into question frontiers of human by science

One of the ways in which the experience of transcendence can be done today in modern societies is the disquieting question of the borders of humans. Indeed, while science contributes to build a more and more artificial and totally "humanized" world, referred by a functional command, on the other hand it puts into question the definitions that man himself had given in the framework of traditional conceptions of the world, up to burst the boundaries between human and non-human. We will question about this paradox and its implications in relation to anthropocentrism which controls the ideals of modernity.

"La question de la philosophie et de son enseignement universitaire conduit toujours à la question de la liberté de la recherche. Comme toute autre discipline, la philosophie ne peut se déployer qu'à condition de sa liberté ; et même plus qu'aucune autre discipline, parce qu'elle ne dispose pas, comme les autres disciplines, d'un objet déterminé par une méthode qui le constituerait, mais doit à chaque fois construire une route sur laquelle marcher. Reste que la philosophie ne s'enseigne et ne se développe que dans le cadre d'institutions, particulièrement d'universités. Comment donc une telle institution peut-elle permettre, tolérer, voire garantir une telle liberté inconditionnelle et condition de tout ? Comment la philosophie peut-elle l'exiger, sans mettre en cause l'institution à laquelle elle réclame pourtant d'appartenir et sans entrer en conflit avcc d'autres disciplines ? Ce danger apparaît en pleine clarté quand la philosophie entre en contact - comme deux plaques tectoniques - avec la théologie, qui, elle, non seulement ne peut pas ne pas admettre une autorité normative (celle du datum révélé et , ensuite seulement, celle du magistère ecclésial) mais ne peut guère éviter la tentation (ou le devoir) d'imposer ses normes et ses résultats à d'autres disciplines, et d'abord à la philosophie.  Ce que Kant nommait le conflit des facultés remonte en fait à la fondation même des universités qui provoqua d'emblée le conflit ente la faculté de théologie et la faculté des arts, et il traverse toute l'histoire des universités jusqu'à nos jours"...
