STEM III is focused on entrepreneurship and presentation as well as leadership. We are being prepared for the real world of business, how to efficiently advertise, and manuever throughout the marketing side of engineering. A major project that contributed to that goal was the Infomercial Concept.
In a group, we were to create an informercial for a concept or a product of our choice. Our group was to make two separate infomercial videos: one at 30 seconds long that is to grab the attention of the buyer and a second one in between 1:15-2:00 minutes long that will further discuss the product. Customer testimonials are recommended to be included. We also had to have a presentation made as well as a prototype of the product.
This concept needed to be "pitched" to the entire class in an energetic and confident manner (like we were actually attempting to get investors for our business). We were to focus on energy, voice projection, and overall confidence.
My group consisted of Sonny, Jake, and Zane and we came up with the idea for a portable trashcan. Our inspiration came from the multiple of dumb infomercials that market a completely useless product and somehow get people to buy it. We wanted to market a trash can that double as a backpack. We named our product Garbage-to-Go to be marketed for outdoorsy people and those who always have trash outside with no garbage can.
The first step we took was to create the prototype for the video and presentation. Jake was able to get his hands on a plastic garbage can as well as thick ropes. We created the protype by cutting into the platic and threading the straps through so that they are adjustable. Meanwhile, Sonny and Zane were creating the logo for the product as well as fun decals to market along with the product. We decided, to make our product more appealing to kid, to include two fun decals, an option to customize the can, and a basketball hoop attachment.
Once the prototype was created, we wrote a script for the infomercials, planning to use scenes from the long video to create the shorter commercial. We planned to showcase our product, the attachments, and some happy customers in an energetic, fun, and slightly aggressive manner. We then recorded the clips for this video and had Zane edit everything together.
We created a short presentation and rehearsed who would say what when presenting. This all added up to an interesting, fun pitch that resulted in Garbage-to-Go being preserved in the display case outside of the STEM classroom.
