The first project of the year was to create a locker organizer that could be used for the average student. It had to fit inside a universal locker size, be able to hold actual supplies, and be affordable to families shopping for school supplies. The organizer also had to be easily applicable inside the locker and easily removed from it. Along with creating a model of the organizer, we had to sketch it on paper and on AutoCADD, as well as create an entire fake company to go along with it. At the end of it all, we had to present our company and our new product along with our marketing strategy.
Sketching and Designing
At first, my partner and I decided to brainstorm ideas on how our locker organizer would function. We had many ideas, but ultimately decided to have different compartments designed to hold different types of supplies. There is a shelf for textbooks, one for a lunchbox, one for a calculator, one for a wallet, a section for pens and pencils, and a pouch for a phone. We also added in a mesh net that would go over the front of the organizer to add some extra privacy. In order to make the item easily detachable, we put two holes in the back of the product where two Command Hooks would be put. The two hooks would come with the item and be applied to the back of the locker; the organizer would then be hooked onto them.
After we got the set idea for the design. we had to sketch out the product along with dimensions and the material list written out. This sketch has the front view (open and closed), the side view, and the back view. It shows all parts in the different views.
Once we had the initial sketch done, we had to transfer the information to a AutoCADD drawing. The drawing had to have the design from different points of view, including hidden lines (the dotted lines), and the different parts that went into building the model. This job was split up between me and my partner, so there are two separate
AutoCADD drawings that hold the information.
Presentation and the Final Product
The final product was made out of hot glued poster board in a 1/3 model size. It had to fit within a 1/3 locker and be functional. As prototypes are, it wasn't completely built and manufactured in plastic with included Command Hooks. We substituted the hooks with thumb tacks and made the model out of poster board. It was prototype, which means it was not meant to be finished, only to function enough to prove that the principle of the product worked.
We presented our product to the class as a company would. Our company, OrganizIT, sells many different types of school supplies for students at cheap prices.
