Practical Training:

03/07 – present –Research Assistant: forest ecology Bavarian Forest Institute (LWF) Freising, Germany. Conduction of literature research on physiological growth and dormancy characteristics of Norway spruce under the influence of global warming; sensitivity of European Beech growth rates to increases in drought stress and the influence of crown transparency on incremental growth. Responsibilities also include the building of an Access database for needle/leaf research conducted at the LWF forest climate stations throughout Bavaria and their statistical analysis. Participation in a project on the variability in the flowering/masting intensities of forest trees in Bavaria during the last 100 years (set for publication in AFZ/Der Wald). Registration, rectification and digitization of historic maps of Germany and Europe for the Spatial analysis of historical data.

08/06 - 01/07 –Forest Resource Aide: Missouri Department of Conservation. Warrenton, Missouri, USA. Duties in the oak-hickory forests of Warrenton included timber cruising, marking and conducting shelterwood and intermediate harvests and marking trees for timber stand improvement (TSI). Conduction of TSI in oak-hickory stands of varying age plus young crop tree release in twenty five year old clear cut stands. Participation in glade restoration, maple control through hack and squirt, controlled burns and fire line establishment. Food plot establishment through plowing, disking and seeding, general area maintenance and care of tools and equipment.

01/05-3/05 –Full time intern: Munich Department of Forestry (the former Forstamt München), Germany. Accompanied experienced foresters on their daily activities. Skills learned include marking of timber, skidding trail establishment, positive and negative selection, TSI of young hardwoods, the use of shelterwood harvests for the conversion of even-aged spruce stands to a mixed age class forests of spruce and beech, even-aged spruce management, low impact forestry and Bavarian hunting management. Participation in educational programs and developed an interpretive hike for twelve year olds on forestry and the history of hunting in Bavaria.

04/02-12/02 –Conservation Assistant: Missouri Department of Conservation. Little Dixie and Eagle Bluffs offices, USA. Duties included participation with prescribed fire in prairie, savannah and forest landscapes and use of fire equipment including fire rakes, flappers, drip torches, ATV water units and ATV mounted drip torches. Experienced in mowing, disking, seeding and fire-line establishment using 110hp 4wd tractors. Savannah and glade restoration plus invasive plant control. Conduction of forest, prairie bird and deer inventories. Further duties included regular maintenance of conservation area parking lots, campsites, shooting ranges and buildings.

01/00-01/01 –Supervisor: World Bird Sanctuary (WBS), Williamsburg, Virginia, USA. Supervisor of five employees in an environmental education program at Busch Gardens, Williamsburg. Conducted six daily programs about conservation using trained raptors and corvids. Educated employees in the field of falconry, bird husbandry and public speaking. When necessary, medical treatment of birds was also given. Acted as the World Bird Sanctuary’s liaison to Busch Gardens and participation in public relations.
