Dirk/Derrick (1732)

Implications of Kit# 157835 Michael Brewer’s signature, Pedigree, and common ancestry with Glen L. Brewer, Richard Olson, and David Embody.

The possible lineal descent of Michael Brewer from Elias3 Brewer and Lena Willemse via their son Dirk4/Derrick (1732) and its implications for the Olson, Embody descendants.  Questions regarding the 4th generation ancestors of Michael and Glen L., both named Richard and both b. ca. 1790, are they really distinct? Michael’s Richard claims to be one of 14 children, Michael and Glen L. both match exactly, could John/Elsie be born later ca. 1753 (1733 being a typo?) and be directly related to Richard?

How do we account for the exact match and possible connection between Olson, Embody and both Michael and Glen L. Brewer in spite of their different surnames. Is the connection genetically valid? If so, could any ancestral connection (adoption?) be more recent than previously expected?

Gregory’s signature makes him more likely to share a common ancestor with Michael Brewer than William L. Brewer.  Why?  As seen in the chart below, Greg has a predicted better probability of sharing a common ancestor with :

Kit 157835, Michael Brewer mfeb@eriecoast.com

1)  Richard/Derick/Dirk Brower  (b.ca. 1732 hence possibly the son of Elias Brouwer and Lena Willemse, Harlingen, NJ ) m. Margariete/Maria Blaine before 1779

2)  Richard/Derick Brewer (b. 1 May 1790 Greenbush, Schoharie Co., NY. bpt. 17 Apr 1795, Helderbergh R.D. Ch., Guilderland, Albany Co. NY ) m. 26 Apr 1818 Annatgen Nancy Shafer at Huron Co., OH [Claimed to be youngest of 14 children]

3)  Edward Brewer (b Feb. 1821 Huron Co., OH; d. 1901 Brimingham, Erie Co., OH) m.1st ca. 1860 Maria Beam, Erie Co., OH. widowed before 1880 m.2d ca. 1887 Margeret M.

4)  Martin Brewer (b. Apr. 1889 Florence Twp., Erie Co., OH. m. Angeline Fridenstine

5)  Edward Brewer (b. 1917 Erie Co., OH)

6)  Michael E. Brewer

In comparing 37 markers, the probability that Mr. Gregory L. Brewer and Michael Brewer shared a common ancestor within the last...

4 generations is 32.28%

8 generations is 72.76%

12 generations is 91.5%

16 generations is 97.7%

Because Michael Brewer has an exact match (37 of 37 markers) with Glen L. Brewer, Richard Olson, and David R. Embody, the same probabilities exist for Gregory L. finding a common ancestor with each of the four participants.

Why? Because Gregory could be descended from one of the brothers of Michael’s ancestor Richard/Derick Brewer.  As you can see in Michael’s pedigree, it has been proposed that Michael’s ancestor Richard/Derick Brewer (1790) who married Nancy Shafer, 4 generations back, may descend from Elias Brouwer and Lena Willemse through their son Dirk (1732).  If so, he should share a common ancestor with me, because I am provably directly descended from Elias and Lena 7 generations back. To test this idea the estimated probability of Michael and I sharing a common ancestor is supportive:

In comparing 37 markers, the probability that Michael Brewer and Richard D. Brewer shared a common ancestor within the last...

4 generations is 32.45%

8 generations is 72.96%

12 generations is 91.61%

16 generations is 97.74%

The story of Michael’s ancestor Richard Brewer (1790) is quite interesting. He lived to be at least 100 and claims to be the youngest of 14 children. In the fall of 1817 Richard, his family, and his brother Peter (bpt 1782) moved from Delaware Co., NY  (the county where my ancestor, Elias/Phebe Brewer, son of Elias and Lena Wilemse, lived ca. 1792 to 1812) venturing to Huron Co., OH. Richard himself fathered 13 children so there is a plethora of Brewers we haven’t yet explored in the search to locate potential ancestral lines for Gregory Brewer, Glen L Brewer., Richard Olson, David Embody and William L. Brewer.  Carol Calkins, a cousin of Michael’s is descended from James K.P. Brewer (1844), a brother of Richard’s son Edward (1821), the ancestor of Michael. She pointed us to information regarding Richard posted by Betty Fink at http://www.bettyfink.com/family/fam01004.htm

Betty identifies both Richard (1790) and his father Richard Brouwer who married Mary Blann as Derick Brewer from baptism records as follows (sent to me by Chris Chester).

George Washington, child of Richard Brouwer and Mary Blann, baptized 31 Jan 1779, sponsors Johannes Mynderse, Eva C. Yates, Reformed Church Schenectady (page 203, no.4545)

Petrus, child of Richard Brouwer and Mary Blaen, baptized 16 Jan 1782, sponsors Petrus Westvaal, Sophia Westvaal, Reformed Church Schenectady, (page 227 no. 5100)

Helena, child of Richard Brower and Margariet Blaine, baptized 6 Nov 1787, Helderberg Reformed Church, Guilderland, NY online at http://www.bettyfink.com/helderb01.htm

and finally, Richard (1790), the ancestor of our Michael Brewer:

Derick, child of Derick Brewer and Maria Blain, born 1 May 1790, baptized 17 April 1795 (no sponsors), Helderberg Reformed Church, Guilderland, NY online athttp://www.bettyfink.com/helderb04.htm

Chris Chester and I think it is likely, as I mentioned earlier, that Richard's (1790-1890) father is Dirck Brouwer, b. 1732, son of Elias Brouwer and Helena Willemse, and brother to Elias Brower of New Jersey, Cambridge, NY and Kortright, NY. and that is the source of the genetic relationships we see expressed in the signatures. We also think it possible that he is the Derrick Brewer who is the father of David Brewer who married Euphema Warner.  More regarding that later.  All of the tested descendants of Elias Brower (1740) of Kortright, carry a common mutation  15->16 at DYS#19 whereas all the other descendants of Jan Brouwer that have been tested carry a 15. This implies that although the others are closely related to Elias/Phebe, they are not of that specific branch of the family. It also predicts that if a descendant of David/Euphemia is located and when tested carries a 16 at DYS#19, then our arguments connecting Richard (1790) to Elias/Lena will be falsified because it would imply that Elias/Lena carried a 16 as well and Richard (1790) would then be unlikely to descend from Elias/Lena as we propose.  That is the hallmark of a good scientific hypothesis -- that it be falsifiable.

Implications of Michael Brewer’s signature, Pedigree, and common ancestry with Glen L. Brewer, Richard Olson, and David Embody.

As remarked earlier, Michael has an exact 37 marker match to Richard Olson, David Embody, and Glen L Brewer. The chart below shows  a very high probability of all of them sharing a common ancestor within 4 generations. Just as a remark, four generations back falls on a Richard Brewer (1790) identified in both pedigrees but claimed to be distinct individuals.

We have been searching for an indication of an adoption, etc., with an intersection of the Rose/Embody/Olson families some time around John/Elsie Brewer’s residence in NJ, OH and Bullskin Twp. PA, but the pedigree of Michael and the signatures of them all point to possibly a More Recent than expected sharing of a common ancestor in 4 generations (83%).  As noted there is a Richard b. 1790,  a 4th generation ancestor that occurs in both Glen and Michael’s lineage. It is possible that Michael’s Richard or one of his sons is the common ancestor. Because the signature of Glen, Michael, Embody and Olson strongly represent the ancestral signature of Johannes, these probabilities also imply a 97% probability that they share Johannes who, if they are both descended from Elias/Lena, would be 8 generations back.

In comparing 37 markers, the probability that Michael Brewer and Glen L. Brewer shared a common ancestor within the last...

4 generations is  83.49%

8 generations is  97.28%

12 generations is  99.55%

16 generations is  99.93%

Scott Kraus remarked August 22, that “in 1800 Town of Walton, Delaware Co., NY, and 1810 Town of Tompkins, Delaware Co., there is a Richard Brewer OVER the age of 45”, and suggests that Michael’s ancestor Richard(1790) who removed to Florence, Huron Co., OH, may have been the son of the listed Richard.

August 22, Chris Chester remarked: “The Embody hook-up comes at one of only two places. Either the Harry Brower, b.1885 and living next to George Charles Embody and Mary Riceman in 1910 in Tompkins Co. is the actual father of Daniel R. Embody (this is the theory I give the most credence to). We don't know Harry's ancestry but his family easily could have come to Tompkins Co. from Delaware Co., and here we have a Brower, living next to an Embody who is in the direct line being questioned. Or, Daniel Embody, b. ca. 1788 was given up to the family of Henry Embody and Margaret Martin. But remember this family is at first Berks County, PA and second Minden, Montgomery Co.,NY (which is where they would have been when Daniel was born). I guess Minden is within striking distance of Duanesburgh, and Richard Brewer-Mary Blann would have been at Duanesburgh in 1788. But why the need to give up a child at that point in time? They continued to have another (Richard). There is no place between Daniel and George Charles Embody (in my opinion) for a Brower to have been inserted. The family is just too isolated from any known Jan Brouwer family.”

I can’t add much to this, except the Y-DNA signatures imply a high probability of a common ancestor being found among Richard’s brother’s children (which we only know of George Washington Brewer (1779) and Petrus Brewer(1782) who would have started having children around 1800; or among the children of the children of Richard(1790) which were born 1820, 1825, 1827, 1831, 1843 -- so would have begun producing offspring from 1840 to 1863. Harry Brewer might be among them. Certainly there was a Henry Brewer b. ~1831, a son of Richard (1790).

It suggests to me that a concerted effort should be made to identify brothers of Richard beyond the two we have so far, and to follow the sons of Richard (1790) since we know one line, Edward (1821) ->Martin (1889) lead to Michael and Martin was boarded out in 1900 at Florence OH. at age 11; presumably Edward had some financial difficulties, was 79 and still had a young son Daniel F. age 8 living at home. His wife Margaret was only 44 and they had been married 13 years.  There would have been more children. Where are they?

It seems to me that Michael’s ancestor Richard (1790) and his father Dirck with 10 of the claimed 14 children unidentified leaves much room to find a connection to all four participants: Michael Brewer, Glen L. Brewer, and the Rose/Embody/Olson puzzle.  One of those children may be David Brewer (1762) who married Euphemia Warner (see below and Chris Chester’s web site “The Brouwer Genealogy Database” at:

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~brouwergenealogydata/ ) and we need very much to locate a living male from David’s line to take the DNA test -- see below.

Current genealogical status --taken together all the current data provides evidence for possible resolution of the Glen L. Brewer match to Michael and the Rose/Embody/Olson puzzle if we can locate additional lines of descent from the presumed 12 children of Derrick Brouwer (1732) and the male children of Richard Brewer (1790).
