Pieter's Line

The following provides material specific to the line of Male descendants that follow from the Pieter2 ( Johannes1) Brouwer Family Line

In the following we outline what is currently accepted as known from research records and compilations about the lives and geographic migrations of the descendants of the male descendants of Pieter2 (Johannes1) Brouwer.  We begin with his sons:

Child3 b. ca 1690  possibly a son, Hendrick, who married Rachel de Bon

Hans3 Brouwer bpt 30 Oct 1695  Flatbush, Queens County, NY m. by 1720 Nelke Goulder

Child3 b. ca 1698 assumed to be Jan3 Brouwer (Pieter2, Johannes1) who married Helena Van Cleef

Pieter3 Brouwer b. ca 1706 m. Antie Berge by 1731

Hans3 is the only son of Pieter2 identified by baptism records. The other Assignments are assumed and tentative. [NYG&B Record Vol. 138 (2007) pg. 253]

                        Our 3d generation Male Descendants

1) Hendrick3 Brouwer (Pieter2, Johannes1) b. circa 1690 in Flatlands, Kings Co., NY Married to Rachel de Bon prior to 1727.

Children of Hendrick3 and Rachel de Bon:

Sara4 bp. 25 Oct 1727 at Harlingen in Somerset Co. NJ

Possibly additional children - see “Speculation”

About Hendrick3 Brouwer

Geographic Locations: Flatlands Kings County, NY 1690 - 17??; Harlingen, Somerset County, NJ  ca. 1720 to after 1727.

We have little information about Hendrick3, also called Henry, but he is assumed to be the Child3  b. ca. 1690 to Pieter2 and Annetje Jans in Flatlands. He later moved to Somerset County, NJ.  He married Rachel de Bon before 1727.  The only record of their children is for a daughter Sara  baptized 1727 at Harlingen, Somerset county NJ.  In a research letter by Harry Macy Jr., it is stated that Hendrick and Rachel Bon had Sara bap. 25 Oct. 1727 at Harlingen in Somerset Co., NJ, wit., Willem and Marreit Krom (GMNJ 15:61)  On the other hand, the church baptisam record reported in NYG&B Record 40 (1909) pg. 284 by William Skillman “Earliest Baptismal Records of the Church of Harlingen (Reformed Dutch) of New Jersey 1727-1734” lists the baptism as “15 Oct 1727 Sarah, dau. Henry Brewis & Rachel Bunn wits; Rachel Crom & Margaret Crom.” The disagreement between date and witness (15 vs 25, and William Krom vs, Rachel Crom is unaccounted for. In either case Hendrick would have been ~ 37 years old. It would seem possible that he had additional children. some perhaps before Sara, though no record to that effect is known.  Unless he died before 1733 there are also possible additional births after Sara (1727) in --?1729 --?1731-- ?1733 (John4)??  But there is no evidence.

In the LDS Family Search Record, Rachael Bon, said to have married Hendrick Brouwer and she is claimed to be born about 1702 in Brooklyn, Kings , NY. The submitter also claims Hendrick was married twice -- to Rachel Bon and to Elizabeth. He has Hendrick christened 15 Jan 1698/99 and resided at Brooklyn, Kings Co. NY, Raritan, Sommerset Co., NJ, and New Brunswick, Middlesex Co., NJ.  He believes Hendrick’s parents to be Adam Adamse Brouwer and Maritje Hendricksen.  This information is incorrect as it applies to our Hendrick who married Rachel Bon and resided in Raritan, Somerset Co. NJ.  He is confusing two different Hendrick’s. One who married Elizabeth is properly identified as a son of Adam brouwer, i.e. Hendrick3 (Adam2,Adam1)per Hoffman  and did reside both in Raritan and New Brunswick. See remarks in NYG&B Record Vol 138(2007) page 253.

It is of interest to note that the de Bon family resided in Gravesend near our Pieter2 Brouwer and his son Hendrick3. Francyn de Bon, wife of Peter Bellew of Gravesend is mentioned by Bergen on page 27  with baptism of a son Pieter 6 June 1668 in NY.

Because of the lack of recorded sons, we will not follow this line further here, except in the page”Speculations” we consider the possibility of undocumented children after Sara, and a son John4 (1733)

2) Hans3 Brouwer (Pieter2, Johannes1) bpt. 30 Oct 1695, Flatbush, Queens Co. NY. Married Nelke Golder, Monmouth Co., NJ. ca. 1719

Children of Hans3 and Nelke Brouwer:

        Anke4  bp 11 September 1720 at Freehold-Middletown, NJ

*Son4 of Hans Brower  bp. 27 January 1723 at Freehold-Middletown, NJ

Child4 of Hans Brouwer, bp. 5 September 1725 at Freehold-Middletown, NJ

        *Jan4, bp. 28 November 1731 at Freehold-Middletown. NJ

About Hans3 Brouwer

Geographic Locations:Flatbush, Queens Co., NY 1695- ca, 1719; Freehold-Middletown, Monmouth Co., NJ ca. 1719- after 1731

Hans (probably short for Johannes) was baptized  30 Oct 1695 at Flatbush son of Peter2 and Antie Brouwers.  (Josephine Frost, Flatbush Baptisms 1:81). He is likely one of the 5 children that appear on the Flatlands 1698 census with his father Peter and his grandfather Johannes1. He would have been about seven years of age when his grandfather died. His uncle Hendrick2 lived nearby in Flatlands as well and it is possible that it is one of the sons of Hans3 that was named in his Uncle Hendrick3’s will to inherit the farm in 1738 [NYG&B Record Vol. 138 (2007) pg. 254]. He is married by 1720 to Nelke, daughter of Joseph Golder, in Freehold-Middletown, Monmouth County NJ. Hans moved from Queens County., NY to Middletown, Monmouth County, NJ and in 1720 married Nelke Goulder whose step mother was Hanna Daws Brouwer, who married Nelke’s father after Hanna was widowed by Derck2 Brouwer, the Uncle of Hans3.  She is claimed to be Han’s second wife, but since no data is supplied concerning this first wife and because he was 25 at the time of marriage to Nelke, it is unconvincing to me to argue he had earlier married and lost a wife in Queens Co., NY before coming to Monmouth Co., NJ and marrying Nelke.  I believe Nelke was his only wife. Note that his first child, Anke4, uses a diminutive or variant of Anneke, named for her grandmother Hannah Daws Brouwer-Golder.

About Jan3 Brouwer

Geographic Locations: Flatbush, Kings County. NY ca. 1698 - ca. 1723, Freehold-Middletown, Monmouth County, NJ 1723 -after 1743

Jan3 was born in Flatlands, Kinhs County, NY where he grew up with his father and grandfather. He moved to Monmouth County, NJ circa 1723 where he married Helena Van Cleef, daughter of  Isbrandt and Jannetje (Vanderbilt) Van Cleef.  They baptized five children in Freehold-

Middletown [GMNJ 23:12, 43,44; 24:46, 91] and two at Harlingen [GMNJ 17:80, 82] By October 1738 we find Jan3 and Helena have 3 children baptized in the North Branch (later Readington) Reformed Dutch Church, Hunterdon County, New Jersey.  There is a significant eight year gap in recorded baptisms between Pieter4  (1727) and Henrikus4 (1735. The 25 December 1735 for Henrikus is symbolics and doesn’t seem to necessarily be representative of his actual birth date. He may have been born much closer to Pieter4. A note to the effect that during this time period in New Jersey, baptism dates are not good indicators of birth dates is made in NYG&B Record Vol 138 (2007) page 254. However, the period spans a sufficient length of time to introduce the possibility of additional children during this period. This is discussed in “Speculations” where we seek to find a place for John4 Brewer (1733) who married Elsie Lewis (Dunbar) and is the ancestor of several of our Brewer surname DNA participants

NOTE:

It is perfectly clear that a Jan3 Brouwer is the son of Pieter2, However, it is not clear that he is in fact the Jan3 who married Helena Van Cleef. It as long been claimed that Pieter2’s son Jan3 married Aegie Sprong and baptized a son Jan4 in Jamaica, Queens County, NY. ; and that the Jan3 Brouwer who married Helena Van Cleef in 1723 is the son of Dirck2 Brouwer, brother of Pieter2 Brouwer. The switch of wives and family was made by Pat Hatcher, Harry Macy Jr., and Henry B. Hoff for the article “Jan Brouwer of Flatlands and Descendants” NYG&B Vol 138 (2007) page 250-260. Such assignment was not lightly made, but it represents their opinion and is not cast in stone. One method of clearing the matter up is to locate living descendants of the two families and comparing DNA. It is currently postulated that the descendants of Pieter2 will have a value of 15 at marker DYS#19, whereas those descended from Derck2 will show a 16 at that locus. For more information see the “Speculation” page discussions regarding the use of DNA to separate the two family groups while seeking a link from John Brewer [b. ca. 1733, m. Elsie Lewis (Dunbar)] to Johannes Brouwer of Flatlands.

4) Pieter3 Brouwer (Pieter2, Johannes1)  b. ca 1706 m. Antie Berge before 1731 Middletown. Monmouth Co., NJ. May have died there by 1731, but is also assumed to be the Peter Brewer of Shrewsbury, NJ who died intestate 1759.

Children of Pieter3 and Antie Berge

        No record of Children

About Pieter3 Brouwer

Geographic Locations: Flatlands, Kings Co. NY ca 1706-17??. Freehold-Middletown, Monmouth Co., NJ 17?? - 1731. Shrewsbury, Monmouth Co. NJ 17?? -  before 1759.

NOTE: Antie Berge is listed as a Middletown member 1731 but as the WIDOW of Pieter Brouwer -see page 22 Genealogy Magazine of NJ however, as pointed out in NYG&B Vol 138 (2007) p. 255 note 57--  Peter Brewer is said to have died intestate by 22 September 1759 with  administration and bond by the widow Anne, James Hankinson and Thunis Amack, all of Monmouth County. Because of the inclusion of Amack, the husband of Jannetje2 (Johannes1), it would appear that this Peter Brewer is a relation of the Johannes Brouwer family, and with the inclusion of Anne the widow, the assumption is made that this is Antie Berge Brouwer.

Because of the lack of children, we will not follow this line further.

Our 4th generation Male Descendants of Pieter2

In the following we outline what is currently accepted as known from research records and compilations about the lives and geographic migrations of the 4th generation descendants of the 3rd generation male descendants of Pieter2 (Johannes1) Brouwer who have known sons..

    Hans3 (Pieter2, Johannes1)

    Jan3 (Pieter2, Johannes1)

1) 4th generation Sons of Hans3 Brouwer (Pieter2, Johannes1)

*Son4 of Hans Brower  bp. 27 January 1723 at Freehold-Middletown, NJ

        *Jan4, bp. 28 November 1731 at Freehold-Middletown. NJ

    JAN4,was  bp. 28 November 1731 at Freehold-Middletown, a child of

Hans Brouwer and Neeltie Goolder, witnesses Jan Brower and Hilletie Van

Cleeff his wife; he is possibly the John son of John who inherited Hendrick’s

farm in 1738. [Added December 28, 2008 -- More on Jan4: The record of marriage in Early New Jersey Marriages - Extracts #360; shows: John BRUER (BREWER) of Mideltown in the County of Monmouth, and James WOOLLEY of Shrewsbury in the same county... [bound to]... William FRANKLIN, Governor... 500 pounds... 1 March 1764 ... John BRUER...obtained license of marriage for himself and for Ann HULSE of Freehold... [w] Sam LEONARD.  The Freehold-Middletown Church baptismal record reported in GMNJ 31:23 Vol.31 shows the baptism on 22 Jan 1767 of a daughter Neetje of John Brewer and Antje Hulsaart; Assuming Antie Hulsaart is Ann Hulse, and based upon the name of the daughter, this would indicate that the John Bruer who married Ann Hulse in 1764 Middletown, NJ was the son of Hans3 Brewer and Neelke Golder. The daughter Neeltje being named for her paternal grandmother. See further discussion under the Speculation page.
