Adelaide Mary was the fourth child and third daughter of James and Janet, and was known in the family as Mary. For information on the movements of the family and conditions in the area around the time of Mary's conception, see the previous section, Our Earliest McVicar ancestors in Australia,
Mary's birth registration entry shows that she was born on 3rd July, 1858 at White Hills, just north of Maryborough, not to be confused with White Hills, 60 km away, now a suburb of Bendigo. She was not present at the registration, which was made by her father, James, who described himself as a storekeeper, aged 31, born in Glasgow, Scotland. He stated that
he was married on February 12, 1852, in London, which was strange, because the original, verified, marriage certificate stated that he was married on February 13th, 1853.
the children of the marriage were Janet Caroline (deceased), Caroline Agnes, and James Neil.
the mother was Caroline Janet, formerly Mcnab, aged 24, born in London, England.
the witness to the birth was Mrs Brooks
The registration took place in Maryborough on 27th July. Strangely, more than three months after the registration, in the column for "Name, if added after Registration of Birth", which was rarely used, Registrar McCullough added "James McVicar is the father named, November 2nd, 1858". While there are many possible reasons for this, none is known to be the case.
Adelaide Mary's descendants have requested that information on her life not be placed on a website.
Adelaide Mary died in Ararat on 10 July 1933, just after her 75th birthday, of a cerebral hemorrhage. Her body was buried in private grave, No. 3431 in the Presbyterian section of the Ararat Cemetery. The grave was purchased by her youngest sister Janet.
