History of Malkhed Jain Basadis

राष्ट्रकूट शासक जैन धर्म के संरक्षक थे और यह तथ्य भारतीय इतिहास में सुप्रमाणित है। यद्यपि प्रथम राष्ट्रकूट शासक दन्तिदुर्ग जैन धर्म का अनुयायी नहीं था परन्तु उसने जैन धर्म को संरक्षण प्रदान किया यह तथ्य अनेक साहित्यिक और शिलालेखीय प्रमाणों के आधार पर सिद्ध है। उनके राज्यकाल के दौरान आचार्य अकलंक देव (720-780 AD) ने राज्य दरबार में प्रतिद्वंदी दार्शनिकों को शास्त्रार्थ में पराजित कर जैन धर्म की प्रभावना की।

राष्ट्रकूट शासक अमोघवर्ष नृपतुंगा, अकालवर्ष कृष्णा द्धितीय, इन्द्र तृतीय और इंद्र चतुर्थ जैन धर्म के अनुयायी और संरक्षक थे इनमे से कई शासकों ने जैन धर्म में दीक्षित हो सल्लेखना पूर्वक मरण को प्राप्त किया।

आरम्भ में राष्ट्रकूट शासकों की राजधानी बीदर जिले में स्थित मयूरखंडी नामक स्थान पर थी पर अमोघवर्ष नृपतुंगा के उदय के पश्चात यह राजधानी आधुनिक गुलबर्गा जिले के सेडम तहसील के मान्यखेत नामक स्थान पर बनायी गयी। यह स्थान आज मलखेड के नाम से जाना जाता है और यह जैन धर्म का प्रमुख केंद्र हुआ करता था।

मलखेड़ दो राज्यवंशो की राजधानी रहा और लगभग 200 वर्षों तक भारत देश की शक्ति का केंद्र रहा। इस स्थान को राष्ट्रकूट और पश्चिमी चालुक्य शासकों ने अपनी राजधानी बनाया और इसे 9 -11 वी शताब्दी तक अपनी राजनीतिक और शासकीय गतिविधियों का केंद्र बनाया। मलखेड़ सन 818 ईस्वी से 982 तक राष्ट्रकूटों और 982 से 1050 ईस्वी तक पश्चिमी चालुक्यों की राजधानी रही।

मलखेड़ :- मलखेड़ जो की प्राचीनकाल में मान्यखेत के नाम से जाना जाता था गुलबर्गा जिला मुख्यालय से 40 किलोमीटर की दूरी पर दक्षिणी पूर्वी दिशा में स्थित है। यह स्थान कागिना नदी के किनारे पर स्थित है। यह स्थान पूर्व मध्यवर्ती काल से जैन धर्म, कला और संस्कृति का केंद्र रहा है।

पार्श्वनाथ बसदी :- प्राचीन जैन पार्श्वनाथ बसदी वर्तमान में भग्न अवस्था में मलखेड़ के किले में स्थित है। यध्यपि यह मंदिर आज भग्न अवस्था में विद्यमान है परन्तु बचे हुए कला अवशेष इसके जैन मंदिर होने पुष्टि करते है। इस मंदिर में कोई जैन प्रतिमा स्थित नहीं है और इस भग्न जैन मंदिर का जीर्णोद्धार- नवीनीकरण सरकार के द्वारा कराया गया है। इस जैन मंदिर का निर्माण एक उच्च तल पर कराया गया है जिसके भवन में केवल 12-13 खंबे और आले ही शेष बचे है।

मलखेड़ किला :- मलखेड़ किला भी जैन धर्म की दृष्टि से महत्त्वपूर्ण स्थान है. इस किले में स्थित रखवाली के लिए बनाये गए बुर्ज के प्रवेश द्वार में जैन तीर्थंकर पार्श्वनाथ की प्रतिमा सरदल में स्थित है। यह माना जाता है की किले में स्थित पार्श्वनाथ बसदी के अवशेषों का ही बाद में अन्य निर्माणों में उपयोग कर लिया गया होगा। यह मान्यता कई साहित्यिक और शिलालेखीय प्रमाणों के आधार पर सिद्ध होती है। कर्नाटक राज्य सरकार के द्वारा कर्नाटक हैदराबाद क्षेत्र विकास बोर्ड को आदेश दिया गया है कि इस किले के जीर्णोद्धार के लिए एक मसौदा तैयार किया जाए ताकि इस किले का जीर्णोद्धार कर पर्यटन स्थल की तरह विकसित किया जा सके।

नेमिनाथ बसदी :- मलखेड किले के प्रवेश द्वार के नजदीक स्थित यह प्राचीन जैन राष्ट्रकूट मंदिर जैन समाज के आधित्पत्य में है। यह जैन मंदिर कई महान आचार्यों और जैन शासकों के कार्यों का साक्षी है। यह जैन मंदिर राष्ट्रकूट और चालुक्य शासन काल के कई धार्मिक और राजनीतिक आंदोलन का साक्षी है। मलखेड़ में स्थित नेमिनाथ जैन बसदी का काल लगभग राष्ट्रकूट शासकों के समय का है और यह मंदिर 9 वि शताब्दी से सम्बंधित होना चाहिए। इस मंदिर के मुख मंडप की वास्तु कला में भारी स्तम्भों का उपयोग किया गया है जो कि राष्ट्रकूट कला में सामान्यतया पायी जाती है।

इस मंदिर का द्वार काफी छोटा है जो कि मुख मंडप से मंदिर तक ले जाता है। मंदिर के अंदर का मंडप भी राष्ट्रकूट स्तम्भों पर बना हुआ है और प्राचीन जैन पाषाण और धातु प्रतिमाओं से युक्त है। इस मंडप से अंदर मंदिर का मुख्य गर्भ गृह स्थित है जहाँ वर्तमान में भगवान मल्लिनाथ की प्रतिमा विराजमान है। यद्यपि यह जैन मंदिर भगवान नेमिनाथ को समर्पित है परन्तु यहाँ मल्लिनाथ की प्रतिमा विराजमान कर दी गयी है। प्राचीन नेमिनाथ तीर्थंकर प्रतिमा पद्मासन अवस्था में मंदिर में विराजमान है और प्रतिमा लगभग साढ़े तीन से चार फ़ीट की ऊंचाई की है। यह प्रतिमा अन्य पाषाण और धातु प्रतिमाओं के साथ मंडप में ही विराजमान है।

संपूर्ण मंदिर प्राचीन राष्ट्रकूट और चालुक्याकालीन प्रतिमाओं से परिपूर्ण है। अरहंत पार्श्वनाथ भगवान की पद्मासन प्रतिमा भी राष्ट्रकूट कला का अनुपम उदहारण है। यहाँ अन्य प्रतिमाओं में कायोत्सर्ग तीर्थंकर प्रतिमाएं, सर्वतोभद्र, त्रितीर्थी , द्धितीर्थी एवं सफ़ेद पाषाण में निर्मित तीर्थंकर प्रतिमाएं अद्धितीय है। यहाँ मंदिर के वाम भाग में स्थित वेदी में धातु की 96 प्रतिमाएं और नन्दीश्वर प्रतिमाएं दर्शनीय है।

इस नेमीनाथ जैन बसदी के मुख मंडप , स्तम्भों और प्रवेश द्वार आदि को रंग से पुताई कर दी गयी है जिस से मंदिर की प्राचीनता का अनुभव नहीं हो पाता है। मलखेड़ का इतिहास :- नृपतुंगा अमोघवर्ष प्रथम राष्ट्रकूट शासक था जिसने न केवल जैन धर्म को प्रश्रय दिया वरन जैन धर्म को अंगीकार करके बाल्य काल से ही जैन धर्म का अध्ययन किया। इतिहासकारों और साहित्य प्रमाणों के आधार पर यह बात स्पष्ठ है कि नृपतुंगा ने आचार्य जिनसेन से भौतिक और आध्यात्मिक शिक्षा ली और वह जैन धर्म और जिनसेन का भक्तः था।

आचार्य जिनसेन नृपतुंगा के गुरु थे और जैन आचार्य गुणभद्र के पूर्ववर्ती और गुरु थे। इन जिनसेन आचार्य ने 24 जैन तीर्थंकरों के जीवन काल पर आधारित महापुराण की रचना प्रारम्भ की जिसे गुणभद्र ने पूर्ण किया। आचार्य गुणभद्र नृपतुंगा के पुत्र कृष्णा -II अकालवर्ष के समकालीन थे। आचार्य गुणभद्र और जिनसेन का अपने समकालीन राष्ट्रकूट शासकों पर अच्छा प्रभाव था और ये इनके द्वारा पूज्य थे।

9 वी शताब्दी के प्रारम्भ में एक महान जैन आचार्य जो कि महावीराचार्य के नाम से इतिहास में अमर है उन्होंने गणित के महान ग्रन्थ "गणितसारसंग्रह " की रचना इसी मलखेड नगर में की थी। आधुनिक गणित में भी प्राचीन गणितज्ञ जैसे आर्यभट, भास्कर , श्रीधर और महावीराचार्य के सिद्धांतो की मान्यता है। जैन आचार्य महावीराचार्य ने गणित के कई सूत्र , प्रमेय और सिद्धांतो का निष्पादन किया जिनमें विभिन्न ज्यामितीय आकृतियों का क्षेत्रफल और क्रमचय संचय जैसे सिद्धांत प्रमुख है।

अमोघवर्ष नृपतुंगा एक महान योद्धा , कुशल प्रशासक होने के साथ ही अच्छे कवि और लेखक भी थे। इन्होने "प्रश्नोत्तरत्नमालिका " नामक ग्रन्थ की रचना की थी जो की संस्कृत भाषा में नैतिकता का सन्देश देती है। इसमें प्रश्न और उत्तर का अनुपम संकलन है जो की स्वयं नृपतुंगा ने किया था। नृपतुंगा के यह रचना इतनी अधिक प्रसिद्ध हुई की ऐसा कहा जाता है की इस रचना का तिब्बती भाषा में भी अनुवाद हुआ था। इस रचना के अंतिम छंद से इस बात का पता लगता है की नृपतुंगा अमोघवर्ष ने जैन धर्म को अंगीकार किया और जैन दीक्षा भी ग्रहण की।

अमोघवर्ष नृपतुंगा ने शाक्टायन व्याकरण पर आधारित एक ग्रन्थ की रचना की जिसका नाम "अमोघवृति " है। नृपतुंगा का संस्कृत के साथ ही कन्नड़ भाषा पर भी पूर्ण अधिकार था और यह बात उनकी कन्नड़ रचना "कविराजमान " के द्वारा सिद्ध होती है। कन्नड़ भाषा की प्रारंभिक रचनाओ में यह रचना उत्कृष्ट समझी जाती है जो की आज भी उपलब्ध है। इस रचना में अलंकार, छंद से परिपूर्ण शब्दों से कावेरी से गोदावरी तक के क्षेत्र का सुन्दर वर्णन किया है जिस से तत्कालीन परिस्थितयों का पता चलता है। जैन आचार्य इन्द्रनन्दि ने तांत्रिक विषय पर आधारित एक ग्रन्थ की रचना इसी राष्ट्रकूट राजधानी मलखेड में की। इस जैन तांत्रिक ग्रन्थ का नाम "ज्वालामालिनी कल्प " है जिसकी रचना का काल 939 ईस्वी माना जाता है। यह आचार्य अपने पूर्ववर्ती आचार्य हेलाचार्य से पीढ़ी में पांचवे स्थान पर है जिन्होंने ज्वालामालिनी पंथ को दिगंबर जैन धर्म में प्रचलित किया।

Rashtrakoota sovereigns were great patrons of Jainism and the fact is well attested in the history of India. Although initial Rashtrakoota emperor Dantidurga was not a Jain by devotion but He patronized Jainism and it is evident from many literary and inscriptional sources that Akalanka dev (720-780 AD) challenged rival philosophers and got triumph over them in a debate held at court of Dantidurga. Rashtrakoota emperors like Amoghvarsha Nriptunga, Akalavarsha Krishna-II, Indra-III and Indra-IV were devoted Jain Rashtrakoota emperors.

Initially capital of Rashtrakoota sovereigns was Mayurkhandi in Modern Bedar disitrict but after emergence of Amoghvarsha Nriptunga as emperor; the capital was shifted to Manyakhet or Malkhed situated in Sedam taluka of Gulbarga district. Malkhed had been remained capital of two dynasties viz Rashtrakootas and Western Chalukyas from 9th to 11th century AD. Malkhed became capital in 818 AD and remain capital till 982 AD for Rashtrakootas and from 982 AD to 1050 AD for Western chalukya sovereigns.

Malkhed: - Malkhed which was anciently known as Manyakhet is situated about 40 Kilometers apart from Gulbarga district headquarter in south east direction. The town is situated on the bank of river Kagina. The place has been center of Jainism since early medieval period of history.

Parshwanatha Basadi: - Ancient Parshwanatha jain basadi is now in ruined state and situated in the fort of Malkhed. Although the Jain temple is in ruined state but artifacts, remnants affirm it as a Jain temple. There are no Jain sculptures in the temple and dilapidated Jain temple structure was renovated by government. The temple is erected on a large platform whose porch is remaining with some niches and structure is established on 12 pillars.

Malkhed Fort: - Malkhed fort has a watch tower which is important from Jainism point of view. The entrance gate to the stairs of watch tower contains a Jina Arhat Parshwa image in lintel and the allusion to concern it with a Jina temple is well attested on inscriptional and literary sources. The state government of Karnataka ordered to Hayderabad Karnataka area development board (HKDAB) to prepare a proposal to renovate the Malkhed fort and work is in progress.

Neminatha Basadi :- Neminatha basadi is situated at the foot of Malkhed fort and the temple is under protection of Jain community. The temple is very ancient and evident of many historical as well as spiritual movements held under Rashrakoota and Chalukyan Era. The date of Neminatha basadi is approximately 9th century which is hailed from Rastrakoota era. The temple has a Mukhmandapa which is erected on bulky pillars of rashtrakoota style.

The temple has a small entrance which leads us to a mandapa or porch which has pillered structure and contains very ancient stone and metallic sculptures of Rashtrakoota era. The mandapa or porch of the basadi has garbhagriha which contains the principal deity of Lord Mallinatha. Although the temple is dedicated to Neminatha but principal deity of temple is Mallinatha which is newly installed in the garbhagriha.

The ancient Jain sculpture of Lord Neminatha is depicted in padmasana posture and has about height of 3.5 to 4 feet. The image is installed in mandapa of temple along with other ancient stone sculptures. The temple is full of Rashtrakoota and Chalukyan specimens of sculptures. Arhat Jina Parshwa sculpture is another masterpiece of Rashtrakoota era. 96 sculptures of bronze metal along with Bronze Nandishwara dweep are installed in a vedi situated at left side of mandapa. Triteerthi image, Kayotsarga Jina savior sculptures and some white stone sculptures of later period are also remarkable. The pillars, entrance gate of garbhagriha, and pillars of Mukhamandapa are painted with colour which seizes the antiquity of this great pantheon.

History of Malkhed: - Nriptunga Amoghvarsha was the first Rashtrkoota Emperor who was not only patron to Jainism but was an ardent follower of Jainism. According to scriptures Nriptunga gained worldly as well as spiritual knowledge under guardianship of Acharya Jinasena. Jinsena was spiritual teacher of Nriptunga and master of Acharya Gunbhadra. He composed Adi purana and Uttarpurana which latterly completed by Gunabhadra. Acharya Gunabhadra was preacher of Krishna II also known as Akalavarsha. He had also good influence over the Rashtrakoota emperor.

In the 9th century AD a great mathematician named Mahaveeracharya composed the mathematics canon renowned as “Ganitsarasamgrah”. Mahaveeracharya was a great mathematician which is revered as great as Aryabhat,Bhaskar and Sridhar. He rendered many formulas, theorems and principals of mensuration and permutations –combinations.

Amoghvarsha nriptunga was also a good composer, poet, writer and great warrior. He himself composed “prasnottarratnamalika” in Sanskrit which is concerned with Morality conduct. The composition was so popular in all over India that it was also translated in Tibbetian language. The hymn of this composition renders us a great piece of information regarding Nriptunga Amoghvarsha’s adoption of Jain ascetic life.

Amoghvarsha nriptunga also composed a teeka over Shaktayan grammar named “Amoghvriti” which represents writing skill of him. Amoghvarsha nriptunga was possessed equal expertise in Kannada and it is evident from his composition in Kannada named “Kavirajmaan”. The composition is considered masterpiece of earlier Kannada language and also available today. The composition contains alankara-couplets and illustrates about Kannadi territory from Godawari River to Kaveri River.

Jaina preacher Indranandi composed a Tantric text named as “Jwalamalini kalp” in 939 AD at Rashtrakoota capital Malkhed. He was fifth Achrya in the pedigree from Helacharya who initiated Jwalamalini cult in Digambara School.
