Chaubara Dera II ; A Parmar era Jain temple at Oon, MP

यद्यपि मध्यकालीन भारत में परमार राजवंश के शासक जैन धर्म के अनुयायी नहीं थे तथापि जैन धर्म परमार राजवंश के शासकों के संरक्षण के फलस्वरूप 9 वी से 13 वी शताब्दी ईस्वी तक निरंतर समृद्धि को प्राप्त होता रहा। परमार वंशी शासक अन्य धर्मों के प्रति भी उदारता के लिए जाने जाते थे और उनके शासन काल में विकसित मंदिर और तीर्थ आज भी विद्यमान है और उस काल की गौरव गाथा कह रहे है। जैन धर्म परमार शासकों सीयक (948 -974 ईस्वी ), वाक्पति मूंज (974 से 995 ईस्वी ) और परमार भोज (1010 -1057 ईस्वी ) के काल में उन्नति को प्राप्त हुआ।

परमार शासकों के काल में धारा और उज्जैन आदि नगर जैन धर्म की गतिविधियों के प्रमुख केंद्र थे। जैन आचार्य माघचन्द्र जो कि मूल संघ की पट्टावली में 53 वे स्थान पर है उन्होंने उज्जैन नगर में 1083 ईस्वी में उज्जैन नगर में जैन धर्म का प्रचार किया और राजस्थान के बारां को अपनी गतिविधियों का केंद्र बनाया।

जैन आचार्य अमितगति , महासेन, धनपाल और धनेश्वर आदि राजा वाक्पति मुंज से सम्मानित और संरक्षित थे। माणिक्यनन्दि जो की परीक्षामुख नामक रचना के लेखक है उन्हें सिंधु राजा ने सम्मानित किया था। महान जैन लेखक प्रभाचन्द्र को राजा भोज देव ने अपने शासन काल में सम्मानित किया था।

परमार राज वंशियों के राज्य में जैन धर्म को कई नए तीर्थ प्राप्त जुए और कई प्राचीन जैन तीर्थों का जीर्णोद्धार और नवीनीकरण हुआ। ये तथ्य तत्कालीन शिलालेखों और साहित्यिक प्रमाणों से पुष्ठ है। इनमे से कई जैन केंद्र आज भी विद्यमान है और कई काल के प्रभाव में भुलाये जा चुके है। बावनगजा,बरवानी,उन,बदनावर,खातेगाँव,गंधावल, भोजपुर, समसगढ़,विदिशा,रायसेन,झालरापाटन,बारां और अरथुना जैन संस्कृति के केंद्र थे।

उन :- उन जिसे आम जैन श्रावकों में उन पावागिरि के नाम से जाना जाता है ; मध्यप्रदेश राज्य के खरगोन जिले के अंतर्गत आता है और जैन धर्मावलम्बियों के अनुसार सिद्ध क्षेत्र है। इस सिद्ध क्षेत्र से सुवर्णभद्र आदि चार मुनियों ने निर्वाण को प्राप्त किया था। यह स्थान खरगोन नगर से लगभग 18 किलोमीटर की दूरी पर पश्चिम दिशा में स्थित है और बावनगजा से दक्षिण पूर्व दिशा में स्थित है।

उन का इतिहास :- एक दन्त कथा के अनुसार,कभी उन नगर में 99 मंदिर विद्यमान थे। यह 99 मंदिर परमार राजा बल्लाल ने एक रोग मुक्ति के उपरान्त बनवाए थे। इस नगर का नाम उन इसी आधार पर पड़ा है। उन का मतलब किसी संख्या से एक कम होना होता है। विडम्बना यह है कि इसमें से काफी मंदिर काल के प्रभाव में नष्ट हो चुके है और जो मंदिर बचे हुए है वह परमार काल की गौरव गाथा कह रहे है। ऐतिहासिक रूप से अनुसन्धान करने पर पता लगता है कि उन नगर में 12 मंदिर विद्यमान थे जिनमे से 3 जैन मंदिर थे और अन्य मंदिर शैव और वैष्णव संप्रदाय से सम्बंधित थे।

वर्तमान में यहाँ ग्वालेश्वर,चौबारा डेरा-I,चौबारा डेरा -II दर्शनीय है। ये मंदिर उत्तरकालीन परमार राजाओं के द्वारा बनवाए गए थे। राजा उदयादित्य (1060-1087 ईस्वी ), देवपाल और बल्लाल ने उन के अधिकतर मंदिरों का निर्माण करवाया था। राजा बल्लाल के नाम पर उन नगर में बल्लालेश्वर शिव मंदिर स्थित है।

चौबारा डेरा-II :- चौबारा डेरा -II मंदिर नगर के मध्य में सरकारी चिकित्सालय के सामने एक ऊँचे चौबारे पर स्थित है। यह मंदिर नगर से गुजरने वाली मुख्य सड़क के किनारे पर स्थित है। यह मंदिर भारतीय पुरातत्व संरक्षण का संरक्षित स्मारक है और लोहे की चारदीवारी से सुरक्षित है। यह मंदिर मध्यकालीन परमार कला और वास्तु का उत्कृष्ट नमूना है और सड़क पर से गुजरते हुए ही इस मंदिर को देखा जा सकता है। यह मंदिर 16 वे तीर्थंकर भगवान शांतिनाथ को समर्पित है और भूमिजा शैली में निर्मित है। यह मंदिर 1185 ईस्वी या 1242 विक्रम संवत के माघ शुक्ल प्रतिपदा के दिन प्रतिष्ठित है।

इस मंदिर का द्वार मंडप या मुख मंडप काफी बड़ी संरचना है और यह मुख मंडप हमे मंडप या अंतराल तक ले जाता है जो कि एक वर्गाकार प्रकोष्ठ है और बारीकी से उकेरे गए 8 विशाल स्तम्भों पर टिका हुआ है। इस मंदिर के स्तम्भ काफी कलात्मक है और मध्यकालीन कला के उत्कृष्ट नमूने है। इन स्तम्भों पर एक गोलाकार , कलात्मक गुम्बद टिका हुआ है। गर्भगृह की छत अनुपस्थित है और इस गर्भगृह में किसी समय भगवान शांतिनाथ की प्रतिमा विराजमान थी जो कि वर्तमान में इंदौर के राष्ट्रीय संग्रहालय में विराजमान है।

इस मंदिर के दक्षिण और वाम पक्ष में स्थित द्वारों के आगे के मंडप कुछ निकले हुए है। मंदिर की बाहरी दीवारों पर नृत्यरत युगल, विद्याधर युगलों और यक्ष यक्षिणियों का अंकन है। इनमे में से अधिकतर प्रतिमाएं खंडित अवस्था में है जो सम्भवतः मुस्लिम आक्रमण कारियों के द्वारा नष्ट किये गए है।

इस मंदिर का गुम्बद भी कलात्मक है और मदिर के मंडप, गर्भगृह के द्वारों के सरदल में जिन प्रतिमाओं का अंकन है जो कि इस मंदिर के जैन मंदिर होने का पुष्ठ प्रमाण है। इस मंदिर को नहलावार का डेरा के नाम से भी जाना जाता है। इस मंदिर से प्राप्त अन्य प्रतिमाओं को उन नगर में स्थित चौबारा डेरा -I मंदिर में सुरक्षित किया गया है। इनमे से कुछ प्रतिमाएं खंडित है और कुछ खंडित नहीं है और आकार में काफी बड़ी है।

Although imperial sovereigns of Parmara dynasty were not follower of Jainism but Jainism had been prospering in north India from 9th to 13th century under patronization of Parmara sovereigns. Parmara monarchs were liberal towards the other faith and Jainism got many of its today’s pilgrimage centers during their reign. Jainism was on its full glory under reign of Siyaka (948 -974 AD) Parmar Bhoja I (1010-1055 AD) and Vakpati Munja (974-995 AD).

Under reign of Parmara monarchs Ujjain and Dhara were major center of Jainism. Jaina Acharya Maghchandra who was 53 in pattawali of Mool sangha spread Jainism in 1083 AD at Ujjain and shifted the seat to Baran city in Rajasthan.

The Jain Acharya Amitgati,Mahasena,Dhanpala and Dhaneshwara were honored and patronized by Vakpati Munja. Manikyanandi author of Parikshamukha was honored by Sindhuraja. The great Jain writer named Prabhachandra was also honored by Bhoja deva.

Imperial reign of Parmara in Malwa and territory conferred many Jain center in medieval period which is described in literature and inscriptions. Some of them are very renowned to us and some are forgotten by us under influence of time. Bawangaja Barwani, Un, Badnawar,Ujjain, Dhara, Bhojpur, Samasgarh, Raisen, Vidisha (Bhaddilpur), Khategaon, Jhalrapatan,Baran and Arthuna are well known to us.

Un :- Un which is also known as Un Pavagiri in common Jain laymen is situated in Khargone district of Madhya Pradesh state and venerated as Siddha Kshetra from where four Ascetics got liberation including Suvarnbhadra Muni. The place is situated about 18 kilometers from Khargone in west direction and 82 Kilometers from Bawangaja in south east direction.

History of Un:- According to a folklore, there were about 99 temples in this vicinity of Un and thus the city got its name un which means una or less than one from a number. Ironically, today some of these temples are vanished under cruel hands of time and some are alive which describe the glorious past of Parmara eon. Historically, there were about 12 pantheons in which 3 belonged to non violent creed Jaina and rests were devoted to Shaivism and Vaishnavism. Chaubara dera I, Chaubara Dera II and Gwaleshwar Jain temples are worth visiting. These temples were constructed during the reign of later Parmara sovereigns of 12th century AD. King Udayaditya (1060-1087AD) and Devpala constructed most of temples in Un village.On the name of King Vallala; a Shiva temple Valleshwara is also situated in Un village.

Chaubara Dera II :- Chaubara dera II temple is situated in the Middle of the Un village in front of Government Dispensary. The temple is reckoned as Chaubara Dera II and constructed on a large platform which is surrounded by a protection wall constructed by ASI. The temple is a great structure from architecture point of view and it could also be seen from road passing through the village. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shantinatha which was constructed in Bhumija Style. The temple was constructed in 1185 AD i.e. 1242 vikrama samvat on Magh sudi pratipada.

The temple is having a large porch in front of mandapa which leads us to mandapa consists of square hall in which a round dome is constructed over hall with the help of eight ornamented, decorated and finely carved pillars. Roof of the sanctum is not present and in the sanctum there was a sculpture of Shantinatha hailed from 1185 AD which is now preserved at Indore government museum. The temple is a great specimen of Parmara art of medieval period and side entrances to the mandapa are stretched outside. The outer walls of the temple are elaborated with sculptures of Vidhyadhar couples, Dancing couples, Yaksh Yakshinis etc. Most of them are mutilated due to offences of Muslim invaders during later medieval period.

The round dome structure is also finely carved and lintels of door frames of sanctum and mandapa have small icons of Jina which attests its Jain assertion. The another name of this Jain temple is Nahalaavar ka dera and another sculptures of this temples are also fairly big in size and now preserved at Chaubara dera no. 1 in the same village.
