Ancient Jain Teerth : Banpur

बुंदेलखंड क्षेत्र प्राचीन ईसा पूर्व काल से आधुनिक इतिहास काल तक जैन धर्म का मुख्य केंद्र रहा है। यह क्षेत्र मौर्यों, कुषाणों, नाग वंशियों , गुप्त राजाओं , गुर्जर प्रतिहार , चंदेल , मुस्लिम शासकों और ब्रिटिश राज के अंतर्गत रहा है। विभिन्न राजवंशों के कई शासकों ने जैन धर्म को संरक्षण प्रदान कर नए जैन तीर्थ क्षेत्रों के विकास में अनुपम योगदान दिया और साथ ही साथ जैन कला और स्थापत्य के विकास में विशेष योगदान दिया।

उत्तरप्रदेश राज्य का ललितपुर जिला प्राचीन जैन मंदिरों, मूर्तियों और पुरावशेषों से परिपूर्ण है। वर्तमान में इन पुरावशेषों , मूर्तियों और मंदिरों को जैन समाज और भरतीय पुरातत्व संरक्षण के द्वारा संरक्षित किया गया है। यह स्थान आज जैन तीर्थों के रूप में परिलक्षित है जो जैन कला और स्थापत्य के क्रमानुसार विकास को चिन्हित करते प्रतीत होते है।

बानपुर :-

बानपुर नामक स्थान उत्तरप्रदेश मध्यप्रदेश राज्य की सीमा पर स्थित होकर उत्तरप्रदेश राज्य के ललितपुर जिले में स्थित है। यह स्थान टीकमगढ़ से दक्षिण पश्चिम दिशा में 12 किलोमीटर, महरौनी से १३ किलोमीटर उत्तर दिशा में और ललितपुर जिला मुख्यालय से लगभग 33 किलोमीटर पूर्व दिशा में स्थित है। इस स्थान पर पहुचने के लिए टीकमगढ़ ललितपुर मार्ग पर टीकमगढ़ से 11 किलोमीटर बाद बांयी तरफ मुड़ना पड़ता है जहा से बानपुर अतिशय क्षेत्र 1.5 किलोमीटर की दूरी पर स्थित है।

बानपुर जैन धर्म का प्राचीन केंद्र रहा है जिसका इतिहास हमे 1000 वर्ष पूर्व गुर्जर प्रतिहार काल तक ले जाता है। यह स्थान प्राचीन सहस्त्रकूट चैत्यालय , शांतिनाथ भगवन की 18 फ़ीट उतुंग प्रतिमा और जैन पुरावशेष संग्रहालय के लिए जाना जाता है। इस स्थान पर लगभग 5 जैन मंदिर विद्यमान है जो कि एक बड़े परिसर में स्थित है। इन मंदिरों का संचालन जैन समाज के द्वारा किया जाता है जबकि सहस्त्रकूट जिनालय भारतीय पुरातत्व सर्वेक्षण के अधीन संरक्षित स्मारक की श्रेणी में आता है।

शांतिनाथ मंदिर, बानपुर :- शांतिनाथ मंदिर में शांतिनाथ कुंथुनाथ और अरहनाथ भगवन की तीन प्राचीन प्रतिमाएं विराजमान है। इनमे से शांतिनाथ भगवान की प्रतिमा मध्य में स्थित होकर लगभग 18 फ़ीट ऊँची है। प्रतिमा की मुद्रा कायोत्सर्ग है जबकि इस प्रतिमा के दोनों तरफ कुंथुनाथ और अरहनाथ की 7 फ़ीट ऊँची प्रतिमाएं विराजमान है।

महावीर शांतिनाथ मंदिर, बानपुर :- महावीर शांतिनाथ मंदिर में प्रभु महावीर की मूलनायक प्रतिमा है जो की लगभग 1000 वर्ष प्राचीन है साथ ही शांतिनाथ भगवन की 8 फ़ीट ऊँची प्रतिमा विराजमान है। एक अन्य प्रतिमा जिसकी ऊंचाई 8 फ़ीट है उसके पाद पीठ पर कोई लांछन अंकित नहीं है पर प्रतिमा के लक्षणों प्राचीन सिद्ध होती है।

महावीर मंदिर, बानपुर :- महावीर मंदिर नागर शैली में निर्मित होकर अर्धमण्डप, मंडप और गर्भ गृह से युक्त है। इस मंदिर में प्रभु वर्धमान, सफ़ेद पाषाण की ऋषभनाथ की प्रतिमा और काले पाषाण की पार्श्वनाथ भगवान की प्रतिमा स्थित है।

चन्द्रप्रभु मंदिर, बानपुर :- चन्द्रप्रभु मंदिर भगवान चन्द्रप्रभु समर्पित है जिसमे भगवान चन्द्रप्रभु की 2.5 फ़ीट की सफ़ेद पाषाण की प्रतिमा स्थित है। इस प्रतिमा के दोनों तरफ भगवान ऋषभनाथ की प्रतिमाएं स्थित है। जिनमे से एक प्रतिमा 1.5 फ़ीट की होकर 1085 ईस्वी में निर्मित है और दूसरी प्रतिमा 1484 ईस्वी में निर्मित है.इस मंदिर की बाहरी दीवारों पर लगभग 16 आलों में जैन प्रतिमाएं विराजमान है।

सहस्त्रकूट चैत्यालय, बानपुर :- सहत्रकूट चैत्यालय इस मंदिर का मुख्य आकर्षण है। यह मंदिर नागर शैली में निर्मित है जिसका शिखर आमलक युक्त है और मंदिर पर यक्ष यक्षिणी की प्रतिमाओं का अंकन है। सहस्त्रकूट चैत्य तक पहुँचने के लिए चार दिशाओं में चार द्वार है जिसकी सीढ़ियां सहस्त्रकूट चैत्य तक ले जाती है। इस सहस्त्रकूट चैत्य पर 1008 प्रतिमाओं का अंकन है। भगवन ऋषभ और देवी सरवस्ती की प्रतिमा उल्लेखनीय है।

बानपुर का इतिहास :- सहस्त्रकूट चैत्यालय का निर्माण जायसवाल समाज या गोलपूर्व समाज के देवपाल और परिवार जनों ने करवाया था। सहस्त्रकूट चैत्य के निर्माण का उल्लेख भगवान शांतिनाथ की प्रतिमा पर उकेरे गए शिलालेख में मिलता है। यह शिलालेख 1180 ईस्वी या संवत 1237 से सम्बंधित है जब इस क्षेत्र पर चंदेल राजा परमार्दी देव का शासन था। इस शिलालेख के लेखन से पूर्व इस सहस्त्रकूट चैत्य का निर्माण हुआ है। इस सहस्त्रकूट चैत्यालय में देवपाल और उसके परिवार जनों के नामों का उल्लेख आया है। रतनपाल,रल्हन,गोल्हण,जहाद और उदयचंद के नामों का उल्लेख आया है। शांतिनाथ मंदिर का निर्माण गोल्हण ने करवाया था जबकि प्रतिमा की स्थापना इनके पुत्र जहाद और उदयचंद ने करवाई थी। ब्रिटिश काल में इस क्षेत्र पर मर्दन सिंह का शासन था जिसने झाँसी की रानी लक्ष्मी बाई और तात्या टोपे की प्रथम स्वतंत्रता संग्राम के दौरान सहायता की थी।

Bundelkhand has been center of Jainism since before Christ era to modern period of history under sovereignty of Maurya, Kushana, Naga, Gupta, Gurjar-Prathihar, Chandella, Muslims and British rule.

Several monarchs of different dynasties patronized Jainism under their reign rendered some great pilgrimage center of Jainism and contributed to development of Jain iconography and architecture.

Lalitpur district is full of such Jain antique sculptures, pantheons and inscriptions. In modern era such ancient places are preserved by Jain community and Archaeological survey of India too. Archaeological heritage is conserved at these places tell us about the glorious past of Jainism and step by step development of Jain arts and Architecture.

Banpur:- The place Banpur is situated at the verge of Madhyapradesh-Uttarpradesh border in Mahrauni tehsil of Lalitpur District. Banpur is situated about 13 apart from Tikamgarh in south west direction, 13 kilometers from Mahrauni in north direction and 33 kilometers from Lalitpur distict headquarter in eastward direction.

On the way to Takamgarh –Laitpur we should take left after 11 kms from Tikamgarh to reach the Jain pilgrimage center Banpur. After about 1.5 Kilometers on this road a grand door welcomes us to Banpur Pilgrimage center.

Banpur is renowned as a miraculous pilgrimage center of Jainism and history leads us to Gurjar Prathihaar ,Chandell era of about 1000 years ago. The main attraction of this place are ancient and rare Sahastrakoot chitya , Shantinatha colossal image and Jain museum of antiquity.

There are about 5 shrines are situated in a large premise of Banpur pilgrimage center. These temples are under management of Jain community where as one temple of Sahastrakoot Chitya is protected under Archaeological survey of India.

Shantinatha Temple:-Sahntinatha temple contains three colossal images of Shantinatha Kunthunatha and Arahnatha saviors. Three sculptures are colossal and middle sculpture of Lord Shantinatha has height of about 18 feets. His image is flanked by two images of Kunthunatha and Arahnatha of about 7 feet heights.

Mahaveera Shantinatha Temple:- Mahaveera Shantinatha temple is dedicated to Vardhmaan savior which has about 8 feet colossal sculpture in kayotsarga posture along with Sahntinatha and unknown Jina of 8 feet height. Mahaveera sculpture is about 1000 yeas old. Mahaveer Temple :- Mahaveer temple is styled in Nagar Shaili which contains Mandap,Ardhmandap and Garbhgriha. There are sculptures of Mahaveer, A white marble Rishabh sculpture and Black marble stone sculpture of Parshwanatha situated in this temple.

Chandraprabhu Temple:- The Chandraprbhu temple is dedicated to lord Chandraprabhu which contains principal deity of 2.5 feet white marble Chandrprabhu in padmasana posture. This image is flanked by two ancient Rishabh sculptures of 1.5 feet height constructed in 1085 AD and 1484 AD. The temple has about 16 niches containing Jina sculptures carved at outer wall of this temple.

Sahastrakoot Chityalaya :- This Sahastrakoot chitya is main attraction of Banpur Jain temple. The temple containing Sahastrakoot chitya is built in Nagar style which has four entrances to reach the chaitya through flight of steps. The temple has great shikhara adorned with Aamlak on top. Beautiful carvings of foliages, subordinate deities are carved in this temple. Sculpture of Rishabh and goddess Saraswati are worth watching here. The main chaitya contains 1008 Jina sculptures carved.

History of Banpur :- Sahastrakoot chaitya was constructed by Devpala and his family of Jaiswal or Golapurav community. The record of construction of Sahastrakoot Chaitya is found in inscription engraved on Shantinatha sculpture at Banpur. The record is hailed from samvat 1237 or 1180 AD during reign of Parmardidev of Chandella clan. The Sahastrkoot chitya should be constructed before this inscription. The inscription has also record of Devpala family members like Ratanpala, Golhan, Ralhan , Jahad and Udaichand. Shantinatha temple was constructed by Golhan and images in this temple were installed by Jahad and Udaichand.

In modern time the place Banpur was under reign of Mardan Singh who helped Rani Laxmi Bai and Tatya Tope in first revolution against British reign in 1857
