History of ancient Jain cave : Thiruparankundram

थिरुपरनकुन्द्रम मदुरै नगर का एक उपनगर है जो की मदुरै नगर से लगभग 7 किमी दक्षिण पश्चिम दिशा में स्थित है. यह स्थान वर्तमान में जैन , हिन्दू और मुस्लिम धर्मावलम्बियों के लिए पवित्र स्थान है. यह स्थान हिन्दुओं के काशी विश्वनाथ मंदिर और मुरुगन स्वामी के मंदिरों के कारण प्रसिद्ध है. यह स्थान लगभग २ शताब्दी ईसा पूर्व से 13 शताब्दी ईस्वी तक जैन धर्म के उत्थान का साक्षी है. यहाँ एक पहाड़ी पर जैन शिला शैय्याएं , तमिल ब्राह्मी शिलालेख और जैन प्रतिमाएं पाई गयी है.

यह स्थान प्रारंभ में जैन धर्म का केंद्र था। यह तथ्य कई विद्वान इतिहासकारों के द्वारा सिद्ध किया जा चुका है। इस पहाड़ी के उपरी भाग में प्राकृतिक गुफाएँ पाई गयी है जिसमे शैल शैय्याएं और तमिल ब्राह्मी शिलालेख पाए गए है. यह शैल शैय्याएं आकार में काफी छोटी है। यह गुफाएं जैन मुनियों के लिए ध्यान और चातुर्मास के लिए काम में आती थी। इस गुफा में शैल शैय्या के किनारों पर तमिल ब्राह्मी शिलालेख खुदा हुआ है. यह शिलालेख लगभग 1 से 2 शताब्दी ईसा पूर्व के है. इन शिलालेखों में इस स्थान के दानवीरों के सन्दर्भ में उल्लेख है. एक ऐसा हि महत्वपूर्ण शिलालेख शैय्या के तकिये वाले हिस्से में पाया गया है,यह शिलालेख प्राचीन श्री लंका के साथ संबंधों को दर्शाता है. इस शिलालेख में एक श्रावक जो कि प्राचीन श्री लंका में इरुकत्तुर नामक स्थान का निवासी था का सन्दर्भ पाया गया है . उसने इस गुफा के लिए दान दिया था .

आगे कशी विश्वनाथ मंदिर के रास्ते में सरस्वती तीर्थ के निकट एक ऊँची , गोल चट्टान पर दो तीर्थंकरों की मूर्तियाँ खुदी हुई है. यह तीर्थंकर प्रतिमाएं लगभग 8 -9 शताब्दी ईसा के काल की है. इनमे से एक प्रतिमा के ऊपर सर्प फन फैलाये हुए दिखाया गया है और कमठ का जीव चट्टानें फैक कर उपसर्ग कर रहा है. धरनेन्द्र छत्र लेकर उपसर्ग से रक्षा कर रहा है। यह प्रतिमा पार्श्वनाथ की है सुर इसके साथ ही जुडी हुई एक अन्य प्रतिमा सुपर्श्वनाथ भगवान की है। दोनों ही प्रतिमाएं खडगासन मुद्रा में है. इसके अलावा इस पहाड़ी पर तीन जैन प्रतिमाएं और शिलालेख हिन्दू मंदिर जिसका नाम पड़नियांडवर मंदिर है उसमे विराजमान है.

This place is Thiruparankundram is suburb of Madurai city and about 7 kms in south west direction from district headquarter.This place is center of faith for Hindus,Jains and Muslims.This place is famous for Hindu's murugan temple and kasi vishwanathar temple.

On the other hand Jainism had been flourishing here between 2 century BC to 13 century AD.We have here Jain abodes, Bas relief sculptures and ancient inscriptions engraved on boulders and in the caves.It has been proved that Jains were the first to use this hillock for their residing and meditation purpose.On the top part of this hillock there are some natural caverns containing Jaina beds.These beds are very small and narrow to fit for a human in sleeping position.On the side edge of the rocky beds there are some ancient inscriptions related to 2 century BC to 1 century BC in Tamil brahmi script.

These inscription contains information regarding the donors to cause the rocky beds.One important inscription is engraved on the pillow side of the rocky bed contains information that the place has the connections with ancient Ceylon.This record mentions the donor as house holder from Ceylon(ilakutumpikan) and a resident of Erukattur.

Near the Saraswati teerth, in the way to kasi vishwanathar temple ;on a boulder two Jain teerthankara figures are engraved at inaccessible heights.These bas relief hailed from 9 to 10 century AD.Both the teerthankara images are in kayotsarga(Standing) position.One of them is clearly parshwanatha with serpent hood over the head and dharnendra flanked umbrella to protect the lord.This bas relief depicts kamatha episode of Parshwnatha life.Another bas relief is also adjacent to the first one.

This teerthankara is also in standing position with attendant deities and recognized as Suparshwanatha by the scholars.There are three another Jain sculptures with inscriptions on a boulder now enclosed in Hindu temple named Padniyandavar temple.
